NEW MUSIC: MARIAH CAREY - 'SKYDIVING'

9/30/2009 0
With her album 'Memoirs of an Imperfect Angel' poised to missed the No.1 spot on Billboard's 200, a new cut from Mariah Carey's recording sessions has surface in the form of "Skydriving", which is produced by hit-maker Timbaland.

The beat seems to dominant Mrs. Carey-Cannon's whisper register, and much of what she sings is as big of a mystery at the finish as it is at the start. It does progressively get better (mainly during the verses), but for the most part, her vocal approach fails to fall in line with the record. Nice try though.

THE BITCH RETURNS TO 'MELROSE PLACE'

9/30/2009 0
On September 29th, actress Heather Locklear was spotted on the Los Angeles set of 'Melrose Place', where she will reprise the role of her iconic character Amanda Woodward on the CW's revival.

Despite struggling in the ratings department, The CW has ordered an additional six scripts of the drama and are banking on Ms. Locklear's return to add some much needed publicity to the show. In case you forgot, it was Locklear's spot on portrayal of the bitchy Amanda Woodward that sparked life into the original and saved it from early cancellation (it ended a successful seven season run in 1999).

NEW MUSIC: CHRIS BROWN FEATURING LIL WAYNE & SWIZZ BEATZ - 'I CAN TRANSFORM YA' [OFFICIAL LEAD SINGLE]

9/29/2009 0
Embattled R&B star Chris Brown tries to fight his way back to the top, with the help of Lil' Wayne and Swizz Beatz, on "I Can Transform Ya", the first single from his third album, Graffiti (due in November).

I'm on the fence about this one, because although I'm glad the singer didn't come with a track designed towards furthering his redemption, I can't help but feel the track's fault lies within the production more so than Chris himself. Cluttered and messy are just a few of the words that come to mind.

That said, it isn't what I would label a bad offering and the Lil' Wayne feature, which has become a little too typical, doesn't come off as contrived as some of his other guest spots. Still with the mounting hill ahead of him, Chris could have come much harder, but only time will reveal how this plays out and whether the public is ready to be transformed under his spell again.

LADY GAGA NAMED BILLBOARD'S 'RISING STAR'

9/28/2009 0
Billboard has announced that pop sensation Lady GaGa will be named its 'Rising Star' at the 2009 Billboard Women In Music event on October 2nd.

The Billboard Rising Star Award rewards artists that have achieved a level of success and proven to have vast potential in the early stages of their career.

Lady Gaga is the undisputed break-out star of the year for many reasons, including the success of her debut album, "The Fame" (Streamline Records), which has spawned four Billboard Hot 100 hit singles like "Just Dance" and "Poker Face," both which reached No. 1 on the tally. "Just Dance" and "Poker Face" are also the Nos. 2 and 8 best-selling digital songs of all time, with 4.6 million and 4 million downloads, respectively.

Gaga recently became the third artist in the history of the Mainstream Top 40 Airplay chart to have three No. 1 singles from a debut album. "The Fame" is also the best-selling album from a debut artist for 2009, with 1,441,000 copies sold in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan. In addition to writing all the tracks on her album, Lady Gaga has previously written for Britney Spears, the Pussycat Dolls, and New Kids on the Block.

"Lady Gaga is one of those rare examples of a truly unique artist with mass appeal," says Bill Werde, Editorial Director of Billboard. "She has established herself as one of today's top songwriters, and the whole world is waiting to see what her next outrageous but brilliant move or style will be. It is that ongoing anticipation, combined with her success that makes her a rising star."

The Billboard Women in Music Event celebrates the most powerful and talented women in the music business, and is held in conjunction with the much-anticipated publication of Billboard's Women In Music Power Players List - recognizing the top female music executives who are leading the industry with their artistic and business vision.

Billboard will also honor Grammy Award-winning artist and pop culture icon Beyoncé with the coveted Billboard Woman of The Year Award at the event.

CIARA PREPS FOURTH ALBUM WITH THE DREAM & TRICKY STEWART

9/28/2009 0
After her third outing 'Fantasy Ride' quickly took a slide down the charts, R&B star Ciara is currently in the studio prepping her fourth album with hit-making duo The Dream and Christopher 'Tricky' Stewart. Peep the report below:

Christopher “Tricky” Stewart and his songwriting partner The-Dream have been secretly spending the summer in the studio producing the entire follow-up to Ciara’s Fantasy Ride. Stewart broke the news to Rap-Up.com in an exclusive interview. “We’re doing the whole project,” he reveals. “We’re pretty good into it at this point. We’re about 14 songs deep right now.”

The 23-year-old ATLien relocated to the West Coast to work on the album with Tricky and Dream, who crafted “High Price” and “Like a Surgeon” off this year’s Fantasy Ride. “She came out to L.A. to work with us. We’re out here making this record ’cause it feels good and the vibe is good,” says the Grammy-winning producer.

The as-yet-untitled effort will feature danceable tracks that have become Ciara’s signature. “This record obviously is gonna have tempo to it, but I think it’s gonna have even more substance than the last record,” Tricky discloses. “She dances and we always want to bring out what she does that other people don’t.”

Although Fantasy Ride boasted collaborations with a who’s who of the industry including Justin Timberlake, Chris Brown, and Ludacris, the “Love Sex Magic” singer will be riding solo this time. “This album we wanted to take a few steps back and make it more about her, so the only feature is Dream. But the features that we do on this record will be remixes.”

The hitmaker even shared a couple song titles with Rap-Up.com. “I love ‘Speechless.’ I love this record called ‘Gifted.’ Those are two of my favorites. ‘Speechless’ is the record with her and Dream together.”

While there’s still the possibility of a release by the end of the year, it’s looking like 2010 will mark Super C’s return. “It’s a little up in the air, but there’s a chance that it might come this year. That was the goal, but at the same time, we didn’t want to rush anything. I think it’s looking more like a next year thing.”

Ciara is pulling out all the stops to make this her best work yet. “Right now, she’s on her grind, coming back, trying to make a better album than she made last time and get back to that mark where everybody knew that she was in the top tier of the female business.”

NEW MUSIC: JOHN MAYER - 'WHO SAYS' [OFFICIAL LEAD SINGLE]

9/26/2009 0
Grammy winner John Mayer is full of questions on "Who Says", the first single from his forthcoming album, Battle Studies (due November 17th).

HUGE disappointment. John is one of those artists that I expect to constantly deliver stellar outings, from "Your Body is Wonderland", "Daughters" and "Waiting on the World to Change", musically he is one of the few, that was delivering material that would still stand on its own feet 50 years down the line.

That said, in comparison to those supreme efforts, this one just seems lazy, uninspired and frankly here for no other reason than simply being here. Not only is this a blunder to his fans, but it is also beneath the artistry that is John Mayer.

American Idol winner Kris Allen refuses to let time slip away on "Live Like We're Dying", the first single from his upcoming debut album (due November 17th).

As one of those who rooted for Kris on American Idol, I think the song effectively conveys the type of music you would expect from him. I'm not crazy about a cover being presented as a single, The Script were actually the first to sing it, but I do think the song is deathly infectious and filled with lyrics that actually have depth. All in all, a nice job from Mr. Allen.

While I love the overall feel and choreography of the video, I can't help but feel that the director, Anthony Mandler, is serving up leftovers. From Rihanna's "Disturbia" in 2008 to Jay-Z's recently released "Run This Town", Mandler directed all three and each of the videos wear similar ensembles. Hopefully, he tries to differentiate and bring originality to his projects in the future.

That said, nice song from Ms. Rogers.

JAY-Z REMAINS IN CONTROL OF THE BILLBOARD 200

9/23/2009 0
After shattering Elvis Presley's record for the most No.1 albums by a solo artist, Jay-Z retains the No. 1 spot on the Billboard 200 with The Blueprint 3.
Jay-Z remains in the No. 1 slot on the Billboard 200 albums chart, with his new album "The Blueprint 3" shifting 298,000 copies (down 37%) in its second week. The set bowed atop the list last week with 476,000.

Traditionally, No. 1-debuting albums that start with monster sales weeks have a steeper second-week decline. Jay-Z's drop, however, was fairly soft, in part because last week was the album's first proper week of availability. Though "The Blueprint 3" had its Sept. 11 release pushed up to Sept. 8, many retailers reportedly didn't have the album until later that week. Jay-Z also performed on the premiere of NBC's "Jay Leno Show," and the residual buzz from his MTV Video Music Awards performance likely bled into sales.

At No. 2 on the Billboard 200, Whitney Houston's "I Look To You" climbs one spot with 156,000 -- up 77%. The album makes the great sales gain this week thanks to Houston's much-publicized two-day stand on "The Oprah Winfrey Show." In three weeks, "I Look to You" has sold 548,000 copies.

Following Houston is the first of five debuts in the top 10: Muse's "The Resistance" at No. 3 with 128,000 copies -- a career-high for the act. That figure more than doubles the band's previous best week, when 2006's "Black Holes and Revelations" debuted and peaked at No. 9 with 48,000.

Kid Cudi is up next with his debut effort, "Man on the Moon: The End of Day," which starts at No. 4 with 104,000 sold. The album is powered by two top 50 hits on the Billboard Hot 100 chart: "Day 'N' Nite' (No. 3) and "Make Her Say" (No. 43).

Drake's seven-song EP, "So Far Gone," gives the rapper his first taste of the Billboard 200, starting at No. 6 with 73,000. His proper full-length debut should surface in early 2010.

Rapper Lil Boosie nets his first top 10 set with "Superbad" starting at No. 7 with 49,000, while rock band Megadeth scores its fifth top 10 set with "Endgame," entering at No. 9 with 45,000.

As for the non-debuts in the top 10 of the Billboard 200, Miley Cyrus' "The Time Of Our Lives" EP falls three rungs to No. 5 with 75,000 (down 38%), Taylor Swift's "Fearless" moves up two slots to No. 8 with 46,000 (up 37%) and the Black Eyed Peas' "The E.N.D." slips three places to No. 10 with 40,000 (down 8%). Swift's big gain was likely the result of both her performance on the MTV Video Music Awards and the endless buzz surrounding Kanye West's hijacking of her Best Female Video acceptance speech.

Overall album sales in this past chart week (ending Sept. 20) totaled 6.42 million units, down 4% compared to the sum last week (6.71 million) and down 7% compared to the same sales week of 2008 (6.92 million). Year to date album sales stand at 250.6 million, down 14% compared to the same total at this point last year (291.4 million).

American Idol runner-up Blake Lewis ends up sleeping alone in the video for "Sad Song", the first single off his sophomore album, Heartbreak on Vinyl.

Not a fan of the song and like his debut album, it seems that the project has been placed in extremely poor hands, who clearly don't know what to do with Mr. Lewis. One of the major problems is that sometimes his creativity and originality can make it extremely hard to place him in a particular market, which is more of a bad thing as opposed to the opposite.

As for the video, it is a solid effort, but will likely get lost in translation.

9/20/2009 0
X-Factor winner Alexandra Burke plays with "Bad Boys" and Flo Rida, in the video from her debut album's first single, which was directed by Bryan Barber.

While most have deemed the song and its accompanying visual as being "dead on arrival", personally, I think Ms. Burke nailed it on both aspects by delivering the unexpected and not conforming to the guidelines placed on talent show winners.

Clearly, her predecessor Leona Lewis has the better voice, but Ms. Lewis' performances and visual clips often mirror that of watching a snail cross the street, which is clearly the area that helps Ms. Burke even the score. Although I found her attempts at delivering sexiness to be quite contrived and visually bankrupt, she made up for it with hordes of confidence and some effective choreography. Well done.
