NEW MUSIC: USHER FEATURING T.I. - 'IN MY BAG'

11/26/2009 0
As Usher continues to work on his forthcoming sixth studio album 'Raymond vs. Raymond' (due in early 2010), a new song from the album's recording sessions has surfaced with the T.I.-assisted cut "In My Bag".

Dishing up his signature swag and cockiness, the cut sees boasting about his new single status and claiming that despite the industry being in a recessions, he's still spending money from 'Confessions'.

It's a solid cut and T.I. has a large role in guiding it there, but by no means up to par with Mr. Raymond's pre-Here I Stand work. (3 out of 5)

WHITNEY HOUSTON PERFORMS ON 'DANCING WITH THE STARS' | MYA SETTLES FOR SECOND PLACE

11/26/2009 0
Music diva Whitney Houston appeared on the finale of 'Dancing With the Stars' to perform "Million Dollar Bill" and the classic "I Wanna Dance with Somebody".

Houston looked great and seemed to be full of energy, but these performances were not by any means good and as we've previously dissected, she seems to be in the routine of talking more than singing. With an impending tour set to kick off next year, vocal rest needs to be atop her list.

As for the competition, R&B singer Mya was forced to settle for second place when voter crowned Donny Osmond the champion of the show's ninth season.

The 'Case of the Ex' songstress had dominated the leader board throughout the season and captured a judge's score of 87 out of 90, yet failed to garner enough votes from the viewing public to fully secure the top position.

Can't say this comes as a shock, given the dancer that is technically the best never seems to secure the crown, which is why past participates Mel B, Mario Lopez and Laila Ali never took the mirrored ball trophy.

ALBUM REVIEW: RIHANNA - 'RATED R'

11/26/2009 0
Shooting to worldwide stardom with the success of “Umbrella”, which collected the star her first Grammy, Barbadian beauty Rihanna looks to reaffirm that her success is not the result of a one time fluke and prove her viability as an artist.

With the singer keeping relatively mum since her February incident with former boyfriend Chris Brown, she lets her feelings be brutally known within Rated R’s thirteen tracks, which she describes as her “mini movie”.

“It's really honest, at times vulnerable, but it came from really, really deep in here [points to heart]. I just feel like I had to call it Rated R, 'cause it's my movie.”

Track-by-Track Analysis:

“Mad House”:
On the creepy and horror movie inspired intro, a suppressed male voice says “Ladies and gentlemen, to those among you who are easily frightened, we suggest you turn away now,” warning you of the potentially shocking and gruesome details that lie ahead in the upcoming adventure.

“Wait Your Turn”:
“The wait is ova”, she declares on the bouncy cut produced by Chase & Status that sees the singer reviving her Island accent, which gradually disappeared as the power of her name began to heighten. It has a hard-hitting aura and although she can seem a little forced at times, it marks a solid start to the album.

“Hard”: Assisted by Young Jeezy, the cocky track sees the singer tooting her own horn by claiming she’s “tougher than a lion” and “the hottest bitch in heels”, as she effortlessly rides the beat and notes that those “aiming at [her] pedestal” will never succeed at dethroning her.

“Stupid in Love”: A piano-laced ballad that utilizes finger snaps, while she reveals being absurdly foolish in a relationship by falling for the wrong guy. It seems to be the first direct address at Brown as she sings, “I still love you, but I just can't do this. I may be dumb, but I'm not stupid,” and continues with “the dunce cap is off, you don't know what you've lost.”

“Rockstar 101”:
Equipped with rock (guitar licks) and urban (drum kicks) elements, the cut sees the singer claiming the only thing she’s missing is a black guitar, but with former Guns N' Roses guitarist Slash featured, the instrument is placed firmly in good hands. “I got my middle finger up, I don't really give a fuck,” she flaunts rebelling.

“Russian Roulette”:
Comparing a relationship to the deadly game, the Ne-Yo penned cut highlights the improvement that lies within her voice as she emotively pinpoints some of the pain contained in the record’s lyrical content. “So many won't get the chance to say goodbye, but it's too late to think of the value of my life,” she sings on the track, which is metaphorically driven and ends with blood rushing gunshot.

“Fire Bomb”:
Heavily backed by electric guitars, the mid-tempo cut references a car, while emblemizing a relationship that has reach the boiling point and is about to blow. Extremely nice effort on all fronts.

“Rude Boy”:
A sexy club bouncer that sees the singer expressing her enjoyment for being sexual pleased, as she declares, “I like it when you pull my hair, I like it when you touch me there.” She also lets it be readily known that there are qualifications that must be met (“Can you get it up?” and “Is you big enough?”) and she easily rides the beat and the cut itself to winning grounds.

“Photographs”:
On the somber Will.i.am-assisted collaboration, she reminisces on love that could have been as she sings, “It shoulda been me and you, now all I got is these photographs.” Nothing much to brag about here, it sounds like a bad misplaced Black Eyed Peas’ leftover and the singer fails to vocally demonstrate the pain of a woman, who has lost the love of her life.

“G4L”:
“I lick the gun when I'm done 'cause I know that revenge is sweet,” she sings on the track abbreviated for ‘gangster for life’. It definitely sounds funny hearing words like “mother-fucker” and “nigga” parting her lips, but the way it marks her turning the tables, as well as, the attitude that she faults easily sells it.

“Te Amo”:
On the Stargate-production, the singer is overtaken by a female lover, who shows interest, and it dissects the feelings that steam from that encounter. Lyrically, it is really intense and she does a nice job of handing the content on the vocals front.

“Cold Case Love”:
A product of Justin Timberlake’s production group The Y’s, the composition of this track easily strikes upon the grounds of amazing and it fully engages you with the strength of its lyrics and its engaging nature, which even makes Miss Fenty’s lackluster vocal performance tolerable.

“The Last Song”: The closing ballad that sees the singer closing the chapter on a relationship with the assistance of pianos, heavy drums and a dominant electric guitar. Vocally, she travels well beyond the limitations of her flaccid voice, but lyrically it ends the album on a poignant note.

Final Verdict:
With a gritty and deeply-rooted atmosphere, it is very clear that Rated R is the reflection of a young woman coming into her own and dealing with the setbacks that come with life, which in this case is leaving an abusive relationship.

Filled with ballads and only the occasional up-tempos, it is not a diary that is without its faults, which is most apparent in the singer’s flimsy vocals that lack the ability or strength to convey a lot of the pain needed to fully bring the records to life.

Regardless, the journey does have a cohesive flow and you have to respect Miss Fenty for taking a chance and not just creating another installment of ‘Good Girl Gone Bad’, which is probably what the label and most fans were expecting.

3.5 out of 5

Celebrity Bug’s Key Tracks: “Hard”, “Stupid In Love”, “Russian Roulette”, “Fire Bomb”, “Rude Boy”, “G4L”, “Te Amo” and “Cold Case Love”.

ALBUM REVIEW: JUSTIN BIEBER - 'MY WORLD'

11/26/2009 0
Catching the attention of Justin Timberlake and Usher through the vehicle of Youtube, which has become a launching ground for undiscovered talent, teen sensation Justin Bieber has already started on the path to success.

The 15-year-old singer recently released his debut album, My World, a project that documents the journey and experiences of teen love. It's a “fun album,” the teen star says. “It's a lot about love and teen love and what would be in my world.”

He does want to clarify the notion that the content is strictly filled with songs about girls and establish that it does touch on some deeper subjects. “There's a lot of stuff that's not just about love. There's songs that teens can relate to, as far as parents not being together and divorce,” he explained. “And just stuff that happens in everyday life. There's a lot of kids my age [and] their whole album [is] 'Everything is perfect.'”

“Real life isn't perfect,” he said, “so my album kind of portrays that. You just have to make the best of what you have.”

Track-by-Track Analysis:

“One Time”:
On the lead single, he reveals his feelings by saying “girl, I love you” and effectively sets the stage with a nice introduction, that is not only age appropriate, but firmly equipped with a bouncy beat and solid vocals.

“Favorite Girl”: “It’s you”, he declares on the record about the girl that stands out from the crowd and takes the crown as his favorite. It has a catchy hook, which he drives home quite nicely.

“Down to Earth”: Produced by Midi Mafia, the cut sees the singer diving into the deeper subject of dealing with the separation of his parents and the emotions that come with dealing with the pain. Although he hasn’t exactly managed to find the emotive force necessary to completely sell a record of this depth, he still demonstrates it well beyond the realms of his fifteen years.

“Bigger”:
“I was a player when I was little”, he says on the second product of Midi Mafia, that takes place as nothing more than a useless filler. He goes on to confess that he’s grown and become “bigger” sense those days, which doesn’t quite feel right coming for someone this youthful, although lyrically it never overlaps into adult territory.

“One Less Lonely Girl”:
In what is an undeniable highlight, Bieber pushes for the chance to “show you what you’re worth”, and heal the broken heart of a lonely girl. It has an slight acoustic feel in parts and his vocals sound really pure, which magnifies the record's beauty.

“First Dance”:
Assisted by his mentor Usher, he imagines taking his first dance, which is given a metaphorical meaning through the lining of the lyrics. His slight soulful vocals are showcased nicely on the slower paced jam, and the R&B stud happily takes the backseat and allows his protege to shine.

“Love Me”: A poppy cut that samples the Cardigans’ “Lovefool”, and is equipped with a nice feel that despite running into the territory of becoming extremely cheesy, still manages to find footing on the grounds of solid.

“Common Denominator”: A piano-laced cut that sees Bieber talking about the girl that makes every thing balance out and takes the pain away, which is nicely done on all fronts (vocals, production and lyrics).

Final Verdict:
While Bieber may only be a teenager, he has the looks, natural ability and personality to elevate this sub-par material to new levels, but with the journey being so short (roughly 30 minutes) and the material being so short ranged, he runs out of gas before making it pass the finish line.

Still with Bieber being so young, he really does have a confidence or swagger (as some people would call it), that performers twice his age have yet to find and this is one of the things that makes ‘My World’ seem slightly better than it really is.

'DANCING WITH THE STARS' - SEASON 9 EPISODES

RIHANNA SLASHES 'RATED R' TO A MERE $0.99

11/24/2009 0
Def Jam and Amazon.com have teamed up to offer Rihanna's new album 'Rated R', for the price of a mere $0.99 (view details here).

Obviously, done as an effort to insure Rihanna secures a higher charting position, which currently sees Susan Boyle taking the top spot with sales of 500k, one has to note what this says about Miss Fenty as a viable selling force.

Going into this week as the most-hyped new release, yet still having to participate in laughable gimmicks and tactics to produce respectable opening numbers. None of that seems to add up, but when there's little (if any) substance as an artist to fall back on, what other choices or options do you have.

LEIGHTON MEESTER PERFORMS ON 'ALEXA CHUNG' | NEW MUSIC: 'CHRISTMAS (BABY, PLEASE COME HOME)'

11/24/2009 0
Pop star Leighton Meester stopped by 'It's On with Alexa Chung' to perform "Somebody to Love", from her forthcoming debut album (due in 2010).

Nothing positive to say about that performance, so we'll keep it moving and talk about her rendition of the yuletide classic "Christmas (Baby, Please Come Home)", from the collection, A Very Special Christmas 7 (available on I-Tunes).

The holiday-oriented cut talks about not feeling the Christmas spirit, because the one you love isn't there to celebrate the joyous occasion with you. It sounds really nice and shows off more of her vocal ability than her lead single "Somebody to Love", although they still appear to be rather flaccid. (3 out of 5)

The singer delivered a great routine with her Paso Doble and easily out-shined the other stars during the Megamix challenge, but her freestyle was a complete and utter disappointment.
