Nicki Minaj Sexes Up 'Marie Claire'

10/19/2016 0

Hip-hop superstar Nicki Minaj brings her sex appeal to the November issue of Marie Claire, where she dishes on the goals of a young woman, competing with men, double standards placed on women of color, violence and Beyoncรฉ. Read excerpts of her interview below:

On The Goals Of A Young Woman: "Nowadays, I feel like [young women] see marrying into money—I think that's a big thing now. I don't want that to be a woman's goal in life. I want your goal in life to be to become an entrepreneur, a rich woman, a career-driven woman. You have to be able to know that you need no man on this planet at all, period, and he should feel that, because when a man feels that you need him, he acts differently."

On Competing With Male Rappers: "I don't need to read a book about [business]. I can look at someone's career and just pinpoint the dos and the don'ts, and the one person I've done that with for my entire career was Jay Z. He did such a great job being an authentic street guy and a businessman, and I was like, Why aren't there women doing that, taking the success from rap and channeling it into their empire? I felt like anything he could do, I could do."

On Double Standards Placed On Women Of Color: "When Kim Kardashian's naked picture came out, [Sharon Osbourne] praised it, and my fans attacked her for being such a hypocrite. So it wasn't trashy and raunchy when a white woman did it, but it was when a black woman did it? It's quite pathetic and sad, but that is my reality, and I've gotten accustomed to just shutting it down."

On Violence: "We tend to not remember the black women who are mourning these men and who are thinking, Oh, my God, what am I going to tell my child now about where his father is, and the struggle it is for black women to then move on after they lose their husband or their boyfriend ... The strong women in these inner cities often go unnoticed ... no one really ever puts a hand out to them."

On Beyoncรฉ: "Every time Bey and I do something together, I see how women are inspired, and it has nothing to do with how we look. It has to do with how we are owning who we are and telling other women you should be the boss of your own career and the brains behind your life or your decisions or your art. I just love that feeling."

Gabrielle Union Lights Up 'Essence'

10/19/2016 0

Actress Gabrielle Union, who currently stars in 'The Birth of a Nation' and will next be seen in 'Almost Christmas', glows on the November issue of Essence magazine, where she sounds off on the Nate Parker controversy, raising black boys and fighting for a seat at the table.

On 'The Birth of a Nation' Controversy:
"The sole reason I took the movie was so I could talk about how sexual violence has historically been used as a weapon of mass destruction. Used against women and families since the dawn of time, and how we are still faced with this , the voicelessness, the powerlessness. As a rape survivor and as an advocate, I cannot shy away from this responsibility because the conversation got difficult. I don't want to put myself above anyone's pain or triggers. Every victim or survivor, I believe you. I support you. I support you if you don't want to see the film. I absolutely understand and respect that. I can't sell the film."

On Raising Black Boys In America:
"Until they walk through the door, I'm terrified. Sometimes I just want to stay off my timeline because it makes those waits until they walk through the door a thousand times worse. Just envisioning them as a hashtag."

On Fighting For A Seat At The Producer's Table:
"I don’t just want to be a hired gun. I want to have a little bit more control over the narrative. The only way I can be empowered to do that is to be a producer. Now with as many projects that will have me, it’s part of the deal."

Peep her stunning cover below and pick up the November issue, available now on newsstands.

Carrie Underwood Covers 'Redbook'

10/12/2016 0

Country superstar Carrie Underwood fronts the November issue of Redbook magazine, where she dishes on disappointing people when she's not on stage, potentially having a second child with husband Mike Fisher and how she don Isaiah has changed her. Read excerpts beneath:

On How "Carrie Underwood" & "Carrie" Differ: "I love being onstage, but that's different. That's not Carrie. That's Carrie Underwood. The rest of my life I feel like I'm incredibly disappointing to people. Like if I run into someone at the grocery store, I really don't know what to say because I don't have a microphone in my hand or bling on. They expect me to be 'Carrie Underwood,' but I'm just Carrie. I'm sorry!"

On Having A Second Child: "If my husband were at the beginning of his career, I'm not sure we could handle it. Since he's kind of nearing the end and won't be traveling so much, we're like, "We can figure it out for not that long." You make it work. When I was pregnant, I thought, How am I going to go on the road? How am I going to keep doing my job? I had to just give it to God and stop worrying about it. Sure enough, we figured it out."

On Bullying & Social Media: "I feel like bullies have changed the way I react to the world. You want to be connected to your fans, and I used to feel like I could go through social media and talk to people, really have that communication. But you get to a point where there are too many mean people saying mean things — probably just to get a reaction from you — and eventually I was like, "I don't know if I can do this." You have to have a barrier up, which is sad."

Her Advice for Working Mothers: "Ask for help. Accepting help is hard for me, but I'm learning. Sometimes I feel guilty that this is my son's life: We live on a bus and we're in a hotel room and sometimes we're in the middle of nowhere and it's not so great. It's not all glamorous. We have a nanny who helps out, especially when we're on the road. But I'd feel guilty asking someone to watch him at home while I run to the grocery store."

On How Her Son Has Changed Her: "I definitely feel like it's changed me as a person. I'm happier. I'm in a better mood a lot of the time. He'll be watching cartoons and I'll be watching him. I'm completely in love. I love it when he's sleepy and I get to hold him and smell him. He doesn't know I'm staring at him and being all googly-eyed!"
