Beyonce Blasted For Lack Of Originality

11/28/2008 0
On a recent shoot for her new music video, Beyonce donned a mermaid-style dress, previously worn by Jennifer Lopez 10 years ago, and reignited the flame on the question of her originality.

Check out the lowdown by clicking here, it seems that everyone from Kylie Minogue, Rihanna, Britney Spears and Alice Dellal, has endured the wrath of Beyonce.

Beyonce has made a career out of taking things that were previously done and trying to pass them off as originals, and the sad part about it is most people buy it, but being that I keep up on the latest in celebrities, I'm not one of them. That said, the Rihanna comparisons were laughable, because she has done the same, just ask Kelis and Fefe Dobson, even Beyonce. As for the Jennifer Lopez situation, IMO, if she's wore it before, you should never attempt it, because compared to her its just going to look second rate, which is very apparent in the picture above.

Love it. Ashanti, IMO, is seriously underrated not only as an artist and songstress, but also as an songwriter, which is sometimes understandable considering it can come across a little fourth gradish at times, but when she gets it right, the singer hits the nail straight on the head.

11/27/2008 0
Beyonce continued her promotional trail in support of her new album, 'I Am...Sasha Fierce', this time by hitting up 'The Tyra Bank Show'. Check it out:

It's nice to see Beyonce's personality, which is often missing in her interviews or anything for that matter, but she has to use something to sell that lackluster album.

'If I Were A Boy'

'Single Ladies'

The performances were just grand, but it kind of bothers me that Beyonce put more energy and spunk (in form of two male dancers), than was present in her AMA performance. Good Stuff and IMO the best performance of 'Single Ladies' to date. 'If I Were A Boy', was emotional, and either Jay-Z has been a bad boy lately or the singer's acting skills have vastly improved.

Album Review: Britney Spears - 'Circus'

11/26/2008 1
Following a year and a half, which seem to result in disaster after disaster for Britney Spears, including a run in the psych ward, losing custody of her kids, and most recently her permanent conservator ship, the pop goddess, who has seem to pulled her self together in recent months, is back with to try another shot at skyrocketing back to the top with her sixth LP, 'Circus'.

Officially set to drop on December 2nd, the pop star's 27th birthday, 'Circus', is the follow-up to 2007's 'Blackout', which was near perfection and critically praised, but also grabbed the title as singer's worst selling studio album, given the lack of promotional efforts.

The opening track, as well as, lead single, 'Womanizer', was a nice way to reintroduce the reigning Queen of Pop (Sorry Madonna) and showcased that Britney hadn't lost her ability to create a fun and catchy pop anthem, shown most evidently by the song's record breaking journey to the top. The track became Britney's second No.1 hit, and broke the record for biggest jump to the top spot (96-1), that had just been set by T.I. and Rihanna the week before. Sure, the song didn't live to any of Britney's other first singles ('Baby One More Time', 'Oops...I Did It Again', 'I'm A Slave 4 U', 'Me Against the Music', or 'Gimme More'), but it more than accomplished what it set out to do.

'Circus', set to serve as the second single, is bass thumping ride, where the singer claims, "I'm like the ring leader, I call the shots", and expands by cooing, "Don't like the back seat, gotta be first", a bold, but true statement, given the singer is arguably the biggest star in world (Sorry Beyonce).

The Frou Frou's Guy Sigworth assisted, 'Out From Under', showcases Britney's voice over a beautifully written ballad, something clearly missing from 'Blackout', as she declares, "I don't want to dream about, all the things that never were, and maybe I could live without when I'm out from under". A testament to the dissolution of her marriage to Kevin Federline, or at least that's the way it's perceive, either way , the track is a total winner and stands as one of the album's brightest shining stars.

The aggressively urbanized, 'Kill the Lights', takes a subject liking to 'Piece of Me', but is just as compelling and even manages to produce the same catchy one lines, such as, "Is that money in your pocket, or are you happy to see me?". The poppy electro-fueled, 'Shattered Glass', is a break up winner, about infidelity, that sees Britney comparing the state of their relationship to shattered glass.

'If You Seek Amy', which translates to 'F.U.C.K. Me', was produced by early Britney collaborator Max Martin and will surely be eaten up by the masses if it eventually gets the much needed release. The track is a creatively smart, saucy, and stunning standout.

Bloodshy & Avant, the producers behind 'Toxic, strike gold again on the melodically influenced, 'Unusual You', whereas, 'Blur', puts a pop urban spin on the 2008 Carrie Underwood hit, 'Last Night', as far as subject matter.

In an ode to the Latino hotties, 'Mmm Papi' surfaces, whereas, the dance friendly, 'Mannequin', is overly contagious track that demands you bust a move. Both tracks are a complete fun fest.

The seductive, 'Lace and Leather', takes on an 80's, Madonna influence vibe, that said, the track is just as sexy as the its title, while, 'My Baby', dedicated to her two sons, is a striking salute.

Overall, compared to 'Blackout', 'Circus' is like a it's twin, but given 'Blackout' was a more urbanized spin, this one takes more of a pop approach, and showcases Britney's vocals more, whereas, 'Blackout' relied more on the use of production and the auto tune. That said, Britney has never been a great singer, she isn't even a good singer, passable at best, but she has a knack for creating addictively infectious music that traps us under her spell every time, something her once counterparts Christina Aguilera and Jessica Simpson, who are obviously stronger vocalists, are still trying to do.

4.5 out of 5

Beyonce Starts 'Fierce' Atop Album Chart

11/26/2008 0
Beyonce scores her third straight No. 1 debut on The Billboard 200 this week as the double-disc "I Am ... Sasha Fierce" (Music World/Columbia) shifts a whopping 482,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

The album, split between material credited to Beyonce and her new alter-ego Sasha Fierce, has already spawned the hits "If I Were a Boy" and "Single Ladies (Put a Ring on It)." Beyonce's 2003 solo debut, "Dangerously in Love," started with 317,000, while 2006's "B-Day" moved 541,000.

In a week with seven top 20 debuts, Nickelback's "Dark Horse" (Roadrunner) sold 326,000 to start at No. 2. The Canadian rock outfit spent an astonishing 156 weeks on the chart with its prior album, 2005's "All the Right Reasons," which is at 6.97 million to date.

Reigning "American Idol" champion David Cook's self-titled 19 Recordings/RCA debut arrives at No. 3 with 280,000. That's more than double the first-week numbers of 2007 champ Jordin Sparks' self-titled debut, which sold 119,000 copies and has gone on to shift 956,000.

Last week's No. 1, Taylor Swift's "Fearless" (Big Machine), slips to No. 4 on a 63% sales decline to 217,000. New at No. 5 is multi-national vocal group Il Divo's "The Promise" (Syco/Columbia) with 162,000. The act's previous album, 2006's "Siempre," debuted at No. 17 with 108,000.

Chop Shop/Atlantic's soundtrack to the runaway hit film "Twilight" is down 5-6 despite a 17% uptick to 125,000. The multi-label "Now 29" compilation slides 3-7 after a 33% decline to 115,000. Walt Disney's "High School Musical 3" soundtrack drops 7-8 on a 9% sales downturn to 86,000, while Enya's "And Winter Came" (Reprise) falls 8-9 on a nearly identical sales slide to 83,000.

AC/DC's "Black Ice" rounds out the top 10 after falling from No. 6. The album sold 73,000 copies in its fifth week of exclusive release via Wal-Mart and Sam's Club, bringing its total to a remarkable 1.39 million.

Other debuts this week include Dido's "Safe Trip Home" (RCA) at No. 13 with 51,000 and the Zac Brown Band's "The Foundation" at No. 17 with 44,000. The new Atlantic signing is enjoying its first country hit with "Chicken Fried."

The compilation "Cities 97 Sampler Vol. 20," rounding up live-in-studio performances from the Minneapolis radio station of the same name, debuts at No. 21 with 35,000. The double-disc album features tracks from Jack Johnson, Sheryl Crow and Jason Mraz, among others.

Former 112 member Slim's solo debut, "Love's Crazy" (M3 Productions/Asylum) starts at No. 32 with 27,000, while country artist Blake Shelton's "Startin' Fires" (Warner Nashville) debuts at No. 34 with 26,000.

At 9.45 million, sales this week are up 6% from last week but down 32% from the same week last year (13.96 million).

American Music Awards 2008 Performance Review

11/24/2008 1
The 2008 American Music Awards took place at the Nokia Theatre L.A. Live in Los Angeles on Sunday. Check out the performances below:

Christina Aguilera Medley

Can't say I'm impressed, it started out good with 'Beautiful' and even the lackluster 'Keeps Gettin' Better', but from then on it took a turn for the worse and became a hooping and hollering fest. The dancing was limited by her choice in shoes, although dancing has never been her strong suit, she always had the vocals to back that up, but even that wasn't present here. Make no mistake, she's still hands down the best female vocalist out, but she's currently 0 for 2, if you count her VMA showing.

Taylor Swift - White Horse

Cute song and even though she has a barely there voice, this is actually one of her better showings.

Miley Cyrus - Fly On the Wall

Can someone please fill me in on what's so great about this girl?
She can't sing, she can't act, and normally that would mean she's, at least, hot, but that isn't the case here, so honestly can someone fill me in? Because the girl possesses has ZERO talent.

Beyonce - Single Ladies (Put a Ring On It)

The body framing entrance was cute, but that was it, as the performances was just a lame rehash at the same thing we've seen her display during recent appearances on SNL, TRL, 106 & Park, and all the other outlets she used to promote the album. I expected the routine to be the same, but I also expected her to do something more to the performance, instead of the normal. Beyonce, normally goes all out and slays the competition during award shows, but that Beyonce isn't present in this performance, AT ALL.

Pussycat Dolls - I Hate This Part / When I Grow Up

Vocally, Nicole was all over the place, but the performance itself wasn't bad, but kind of what you expect from the girls. I still wish vocals were shared more with Melody, given her live showings are a little more stable than Nicole's.

Kanye West - Heartless

Good performance.

Leona Lewis - Better in Time

Vocally, this woman is beyond AMAZING, but unfortunately she is also beyond BORING.

New Kids On The Block Medley

Hmmmm...

The Jonas Brothers

I echo everything I said about Miley Cyrus, with the exception of the cute part.

Rihanna - Rehab

I never, ever, ever ,ever, ever thought I would say this, but SHE NAILED IT.
Visually she looked stunning and vocally she was on point, that said I am a little baffled as to why Justin didn't join her on stage, given he was there, but BEST RIHANNA PERFORMANCE BY A MILE.

Alicia Keys - Superwoman

With the help of Queen Latifah and Kathleen Battle, Alicia delivered a great performance. Always the trendsetter, she combined R&B, Hip-hop, and Opera, and Queen Latifah is so multi-talented its ridiculous.

Mariah Carey - I Stay In Love

Her and Nick in the beginning (too cute), but the performance was lackluster at best, Mariah has never been a strong performer and with the current state of her voice, that's not changing anytime soon. I still say I would rather her lip sync and just put more energy and thought into the performance itself.

Sarah McLachlan & Pink - Angel

Vocally good. Pink also performed 'Sober', which also saw strong vocals, but the performance has yet to surface on Youtube.

Neyo's lackluster performance also wasn't present, but I will update when it does.

Overall, I was highly disappointed with the show that failed to live up to the expectations you would think the star studded lineup would have produced.

Best of the Night:
Rihanna, singing in tune, absolutely nothing tops it. Alicia, trendsetting and different, wasn't in love with it, but I just appreciate the fact that this lady's artistry has no bounds.

Disappointing:
Beyonce, is quickly proving, Rihanna's dominance might not come to an end as quickly as her fans think. Step your game up.

Worst of the Night:
The show as a whole.

As for the winners, they were all types of wrong, Chris Brown as Artist of the Year, child please.
