2009 BET Awards (Performances & Review)

6/30/2009 0
Check out the performances from the 2009 BET Awards, as well as, our thoughts and reviews of the show that sought to be a tribute to Michael Jackson, but fail short.

New Edition Opening With Jackson 5 Medley

Keri Hilson - "Turnin' Me On / Knock You Down"

Ne-Yo - "Lady In My Life"

Ciara - "Heal The World"

Keyshia Cole & Monica - "Trust"

Beyonce - "Ave Maria / In The Arms Of An Angel"

Maxwell - "Pretty Wings"

Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo & Fabolous - "She's Got Her Own"

Keith Sweat/Guy/Bell Biv DeVoe Medley

The O'Jays Tribute

Jamie Foxx with T-Pain & Travis Barker - "Blame It"

Soulja Boy - "Turn My Swag On"

Jay-Z - "D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)"

Drake/Lil' Wayne/Birdman/Young Money Medley

As a whole, the show failed to materialize the advertise Michael Jackson tribute and the stars that were reported to take the stage such as Usher, Justin Timberlake, Whitney Houston, and Chris Brown, failed to surface. So, it seems that the advertisement was nothing more than a plot for higher ratings, given in no shape was this a tribute show, in fact, most of the artists that took the stage to honor the legend, did more harm than good.

Beyonce: Although we're probably in the minority here, we thought her performance was absolutely stunning. You would have pegged the singer to perform "Ego" or "Single Ladies" in a daring dancefest, but she flipped the script and gave a simple, yet beautiful balladry performance, that no one saw coming. That alone is what makes the performance a winner, but truth be told, this was a performance beyond and too big for the BET Awards.

Keri Hilson: In her first major performance, Ms. Hilson outshined the best of them with her entertaining spectacle and tribute to the legendary great. That said, one can not overlook her flaccid vocals or that disastrous accapella at the close.

Ciara: Ballads just aren't for everyone and Ciara's tribute would have been served better, if she, honored the singer's dancing, because her vocals just aren't dominant enough to carry such an inspirational and historical track.

Keyshia Cole & Monica: Just like the studio version, Monica outshine the star on her own record, but both ladies still deliver good vocals, despite the performance being a little dry.

New Edition: The guys started the night off on a bad note by delivering the show's worst opening performance yet. From the imitative and forced vocals to the extremely lackluster factor of the group in general, it was all very forgettable.

Ne-Yo: If anyone did Michael justice, it was Ne-Yo and his superb cover of "Lady In My Life".

Jamie Foxx: As a host, Jamie was good, but never great and all the self promoting, quickly made the show seem like more of a Jamie Foxx show than a tribute to Michael. That said, his intro was a great start to the show and he did deliver a top-notched performance at the end.

Best of the Night:
Ne-Yo, Keri Hilson, Maxwell and Janet Jackson's heartfelt appearance.

Disappointing:
Beyonce, Jay-Z, Keyshia Cole and Monica.

Worst of the Night:
New Edition, Soulja Boy and Ciara.

In conclusion, the show never quite managed to be the tribute that they were seeking, so hopefully BET puts together another show that really captures the essence of Michael Jackson's legacy. Aside from Ne-Yo, all of the tributes, were more embarrassing and disrespectful than honoring or worthy. That said, it has to be noted that this show was put together in a mere three days.

Janet Jackson Breaks Her Silence

6/30/2009 0
In the night's most heartfelt moment, Janet Jackson took the stage as a representative for the family to speak briefly on her brother's passing.

The singer was in Atlanta shooting the sequel to 'Why Did I Get Married' when she heard the news and this marked the singer's first appearance since the tragedy. Aside from bringing you to tears, you can't help but admire her strength to take on the task a mere three days after receiving the devastating news. Their dad Joe Jackson was also in attendance.

2009 BET Awards (Red Carpet Arrivals)

6/30/2009 0
Superstar Beyonce attends the 2009 BET Awards at the Shrine Auditorium in Los Angeles on Sunday, where she along with numerous other acts paid tribute to the King of Pop Michael Jackson.

The "Single Ladies" songstress dedicated her first win for Best Female R&B Artist to Michael Jackson and also picked up a win for Video of the Year. Sadly, her sequined mini dress didn't make her winner on the red carpet.

Multitasking songstress Alicia Keys was honored for her humanitarian work and look absolutely ravishing in her embellished cocktail dress and heels.

R&B singer Ciara donned a strapless leather dress and nude pumps. Not a bad look, but leather and the summer time aren't really a match made in heaven.

Kanye West and Best Male R&B Artist winner Ne-Yo showcased their girlfriends before heading to watch the show, which included three performances for the R&B singer.

A celeb's worst red carpet nightmare became a reality when Amerie wore the same long sleeve Alexander Wang dress as Kanye West's girlfriend Amber Rose. Love the look on both, but since it's the summer time, the pink just makes it pop more. Best New Artist winner Keri Hilson continued her disappointing streak with a strapless multicolored dress and hideous hair.

If the reports are true, which they likely are, Beyonce got her demands when Letoya was forced to perform on the preshow, but the singer was still smiles as she walked the carpet in a mini Balmain dress.

Reportedly, Jay-Z pulled the same stunt and told BET that if they allowed Chris Brown to be a part of the Michael Jackson tribute that he wouldn't take the stage. With that said, there's no denying the superstar power that these two possess, but at some point, enough is enough, and BET has to stand their grounds with these childish and manipulative threats.

Mogul Tyra Banks added to her frame with sky high heels and a sexy menswear-inspired ensemble, which she somehow manages to make work, while Bad Boy founder Sean 'Diddy' Combs looked daper in his classic suit.

R&B star Cassie flaunted her body in a sexy black dress. As for the hair, sometimes we love it and sometimes we don't.

Cute and sexy looks from Teairra Mari and Adrienne Bailon (below).

R&B singer Ginuwine kept it sexy for the ladies, as did fellow singer Trey Songz (below).

R&B star Mario showed off his newly bald head, while singer/actor Tyrese posed for the cameras with his winning smile.

Love him or hate him, there's no denying that Ray-J looks handsome in his gray suit.

Best Group winners Day 26 closed the preshow by performing their hit "Imma Put It On Her".

Best Male Hip-Hop Nominees:
Lil Wayne
Rick Ross
T.I.
Kanye West
Young Jeezy

Who Should Win?
We're torn, because there's no denying the creativity that lies within Kanye West, he took major risks with '808s and Heartbreaks' and somehow made it work. But, out of the nominees, T.I. released the best album and Lil Wayne collected the Grammy's, so that makes it a three man race. That said, when push comes to shove, we officially endorse the self-proclaimed King of the South.

Who Will Win?
Lil Wayne or Kanye West.

Best Female Hip-Hop Nominees:
Lil Mama
M.I.A.
Trina

Who Should Win?
For the second straight year, none of the females of Hip-Hop really had a great year, but out of the three nominated ladies, M.I.A. should take the trophy.

He will live in my heart forever but it's not enough. My life feels so empty. I don't think anyone knew how much we loved each other. The purest most giving love I've ever known. Oh God! I'm going to miss him. I can't yet imagine life with out him. But I guess with God's help... I'll learn. I keep looking at the photo he gave me of himself, which says, 'To my true love Elizabeth, I love you forever.' And, I will love HIM forever."
John Landis (Director of "Thriller")

"I call on people around the world to pray for him and his family in the hour. I have known Michael since we were both teens, worked with him, marched for him, hosted him at our House of Justice headquarters in New York, and we joined together to eulogize our mutual idol, James Brown. I have known him at his high moments and his low moments and I know he would want us to pray for his family."

Breaking News: Michael Jackson Dies At Age 50 [1958 - 2009]

6/25/2009 0
Pop giant Michael Jackson, who took to the stage as a child star and went on to set the world dancing to the thumping rhythms of his music for decades, died Thursday, TMZ website reported. He was 50.

"We've just learned Michael Jackson has died," TMZ said.

"Michael suffered a cardiac arrest earlier this afternoon and paramedics were unable to revive him. We're told when paramedics arrived Jackson had no pulse and they never got a pulse back," the entertainment site said.

There was no official confirmation of the reported death and spokespersons for Jackson could not be reached for comment.

Earlier, the Los Angeles Times said that the singer had been rushed to a Los Angeles-area hospital by fire department paramedics who found him not breathing when they arrived at the singer's home.

The newspaper said paramedics performed cardiopulmonary resuscitation at the scene before taking him to the UCLA Medical Center hospital.

Jackson had been due to start a series of comeback concerts in London on July 13 running until March 2010. The singer, whose hits include "Thriller" and "Billie Jean," had been rehearsing in the Los Angeles area for the past two months.

The shows for the 50 London concerts sold out within hours of going on sale in March.

Jackson started out as a child star in the band "The Jackson 5" more than 40 years ago.

He has lived as a virtual recluse since his acquittal in 2005 on charges of child molestation.

There have been concerns about Jackson's health in recent years but the promoters of the London shows, AEG Live, said in March that Jackson had passed a 4-1/2 hour physical examination with independent doctors.

Shocking. I can't even fathom this right now, but one thing is for sure, he will forever live in our hearts forever with the unique and creative music he brought to the forefront, and despite his wild antics and the speculations surrounding him, his resume speaks for itself.

Today, has definitely proved to be a sad day for the entertainment industry with the passing of two legends (Michael Jackson & Farrah Fawcett). Rest In Peace, to you both and major condolences to their family during this hard and difficult time.
