Pop legend Mariah Carey premiered her hotly anticipated new single, "Obsessed", from her forthcoming twelfth studio album, Memoirs of An Imperfect Angel, on Chicago's B96 radio station earlier today.
The track is obviously a diss towards Eminem as she questions, "Why are you so obsessed with me?", referring to his recent diss record "Bagpipes From Baghdad" from his recently released, Relapse. Her parade doesn't stop there, she goes farther by labeling him a "conversation" and referring to herself as a "press conversation", imply that she has a legendary and iconic status that he may never reach. That ride continues throughout the track as she calls him "lame" and roasts him for claiming they had sexual relations.
While all of that is gravy, it still can't save this Tricky Stewart and The Dream production from being somewhat disappointing, given it is laced with the woman often labeled as 'The Voice', it fails to deliver anything more than any other standard R&B chick. From the vocoder effect to the somewhat unequal age/subject matter, one would expect Mariah to come harder than this.
That aside, the cut is solid and has an extremely radio friendly quality that will probably help her notch her historic nineteenth #1. The controvesary will only help, so hopefully she doesn't half step with the video, which will be helmed by Brett Ratner.
