After a disappointing start for Melrose Place, The CW now has reasons to celebrate, given the Nina Dobrev and Paul Wesley-led drama The Vampire Diaries garnished the network their highest series-premiere ratings EVER.
The CW’s highly touted Vampire Diaries was amply sampled, with 4.84 million viewers in the Thursday, 8 p.m. hour on Sept. 10, according to the fast affiliate results. This was the largest audience for any CW series-premiere, topping 90210 from one year earlier.
Vampire Diaries also lifted The CW to a record performance in the time period in women 18-34 (3.0 rating/10 share) and women 18-49 (2.8/ 8); and best in total viewers, adults 18-34 (2.2/ 8) and adults 18-49 (2.1/ 6) since Oct. 2007.
In addition, Diaries finished second in the hour (behind football on NBC) in women 18-34 and adults 18-34, building from year-ago opening levels for former occupant Smallville by 500,000 viewers and as much as 114 percent among women 18-34.
Despite the ample lead-in support, retention for the fifth season-premiere of lead-out Supernatural (Viewers: #5, 3.39 million; A18-49: #2t, 1.5/ 4 at 9 p.m.) out of the second-half of The Vampire Diaries (Viewers: 5.03 million; A18-49: 2.2/ 6 at 8:30 p.m.) was a marginal 67 percent in total viewers and 71 percent in the demo.

Congrats. I did get a chance to watch the series premieres of Melrose Place and The Vampire Diaries, and I found them both to be quite entertaining. Can't wait to see how they unfold as the season progresses.
