REVIEW: DRAKE - 'THANK ME LATER'

Drake

Developing a massive following through mixtapes and behind the success of his Grammy-nominated single “Best I Ever Had”, actor turned rapper Aubrey ‘Drake’ Graham finally released his debut album ‘Thank Me Later’.

Filled with the black clouds of fame and all the disappointments that stem from its existence, the rapper brings along a superstar line-up of guests including Jay-Z, Alicia Keys and Lil’ Wayne to assist on the highly-anticipated effort.

SUMMARY ANALYSIS

On the starting cut “Fireworks”, which features R&B songstress Alicia Keys, he begins the set on strong footing as longs to find a love that his parents never experience, while the follow-up “Karaoke”, shows his versatility by switching back and forth between singing and rapping about love lost.

Two of the project’s biggest gems “Find Your Love” and the sexy “Show Me A Good Time”, feature production from Kanye West and recall moments of the genius that was his 2008 release ‘808s and Heartbreak’.

One positive factor is that with Drake, the singing is a more accessible asset, but unfortunately, it lacks some of the distinctive qualities implemented by West.

Other highlights include the first single “Over”, that sees the rapper striving with great lyrics and dynamic production courtesy of Boi-1da, the confident “Miss Me”, and “Shut It Down”, on which he surprisingly duets with The-Dream.

What’s most impressive about the set is the newcomer’s skill to match his more famous collaborators, such as Jay-Z on the celebratory “Light Up”, T.I. on the underwhelming “Fancy” and Young Jeezy on the truly memorable and unforgettable “Unforgettable”.

FINAL VERDICT

By the end of the 14-track set, Drake gives listeners plenty of reasons to thank him as he emerges as an unorthodox addition to the hip-hop scene.

He doesn’t waste his time rapping about the traditional rap lifestyle or by dishing out anthems about his wealth or latest jewelry addition, instead the audience receives thoughtfully-developed lyrics, cohesive production and a warming vulnerability that gives you a view of the scenery through his eyes.
