REVIEW: MILEY CYRUS - 'CAN'T BE TAMED'

Miley Cyrus

It’s the biggest fear in every young star’s life, the moment where they have to put it all on the line in an effort to advance from child to adult star.

Britney Spears conquered it with the release of 2000’s ‘Oops…I Did It Again’, as did Justin Timberlake and Christina Aguilera in 2002 with ‘Justified’ and ‘Stripped’, and now Miley Cyrus attempts to with ‘Can’t Be Tamed’.

SUMMARY ANALYSIS

“Liberty Walk”, opens the set and begins to set her argument in motion as she asserts her freedom and boasts “don’t live a lie”, while simultaneously severing ties with the people that tried to hold her down.

On the follow-up “Who Owns My Heart”, she struggles to decipher who has control of her heart, the music or the guy standing in front of her, while “Two More Lonely People” sees her ending a relationship and “My Heart Beats For Love”, shows that she is optimistic of love in the future.

“Every Rose Has Its Thorn”, a remake of Poison’s classic 1988 hit, she loses a lot of the rocky elements and opts to deliver a version that is slightly more pop, and while it is miles away from reaching the original; it does stand as one of the disc’s better moments (as does the ballad “Stay”).

Other notable moments include the lead single and title track “Can’t Be Tamed”, “Forgiveness and Love”, a ballad that is years beyond her age, and the boldest cut “Robot”, on which she chants “stop telling me I'm part of the big machine”.

The low points come in the form of “Scars”, on which she unsuccessfully channels her inner Kelly Clarkson, and “Permanent December”, which sounds like a direct rip-off of Ke$ha, while “Take Me Along” is simply forgettable.

FINAL VERDICT

In the end, Miley Cyrus becomes just what she strives to get away from, “a part of a big machine”, and it’s most evident in the fact that not a single attribute of the album comes across authentic or genuine.

When she chants about asserting her freedom or dons a risqué outfit, it’s just as hard to keep from laughing as it is to take her serious, which only reaffirms that she has few more years to go before she is ready to play with the big girls.
