TV REVIEW: 'BETTER', A SISTERLY WAR

TV

ABC adds a fourth comedy to their line-up, which already includes ‘The Middle’, ‘Cougar Town’ and ‘Modern Family’, with ‘Better With Me’.

Starring Joanna Garcia as Mia and Jennifer Finnigan as her older sister Maddie, the show is about three relationships and their different stages.

Mia and her new fiancé Casey have been together just seven and a half weeks, Maddie and her longtime boyfriend Ben (Josh Cooke) have been together nine years, and their parents Vicki and Joel are the long-married couple of 35 years.

When Casey decides to propose to Mia in the pilot episode, after an unexpected pregnancy, it highlights Maddie and Ben, who have chosen not to get married and deemed it as a “valid life choice”, much to the dismay of her parents.

The problem for the show begin with jokes themselves, because, while the other three shows on the comedy line-up approach their delivery in a smart and sharp manner, here you see the jokes coming before the actors ever part there lips.

The actors are likable (for the most part), but Jake Lacy, who plays Casey, cements his positions as the scene-stealer of the show, despite having less acting experience than any of the other veteran cast members.

Another positive factor is the connection with the audience through the three relationships, which likely represent that of the viewers (in some form).

FINAL VERDICT
To put it simply, ‘Better With Me’ fails to live up to it’s title, in fact, of the comedies on ABC, it easily takes it places as the worst of the bunch.

The jokes aren’t funny and just from the first episode, you get a sense that they are going to run this “valid life choice” tag line into the ground, instead of actually realizing that it is just that, an acceptable and valid life choice. (C+)
