TV REVIEW: 'DIARIES' IS SINFULLY GOOD

The Vampire Diaries,TV

In the second season premiere of ‘The Vampire Diaries’, which is aptly entitled “The Return”, we resume from the events of the disastrous finale that saw the return of Katherine Pierce, the doppelganger of Elena (Nina Dobrev).

Equipped with tighter clothing and bigger hair, Katherine is the opposite of Elena: She is evil, she loves to play games and boy does she play them oh-so-well.

From her showdown with Bonnie (Katerina Graham) to her ending tussle with Caroline (Candice Accola), the vamp’s return was well-worth the wait.

Dobrev, who has often been criticized for her shaky acting performances, delivers spot on portrayals of Pierce and Gilbert, giving each of the characters little sentiments of individually that allows them to remain distinct.

As mutually exclusive as each of them may be, their one area of concurrence is through their love for Stefan (Paul Wesley), a feat that doesn’t sit well with Damon (Ian Somerhalder), who feels betrayed by both women.

After 145 years of pining after Katherine and finally being able to feel something for Elena, only to realize neither of them share his feelings is something he doesn’t take in stride, but rather by snapping the neck of Jeremy (Steven McQueen), eliminating any signs of growth that he had shown in the first season.

Among all the action, we are introduced to Mason Lockwood (Taylor Kinney), the mysterious uncle of Tyler (Michael Trevino), who is trying to work through his anger problems, before ending with the human death of Caroline and a special personalized message for the Salvatore brothers, “Game On”.

FINAL VERDICT
To put it simply, as much as we adore Robert Pattinson and company, not only is ‘The Vampire Diaries’ as good as ‘The Twilight Saga’, but thanks to witty writing and provoking story lines, it’s far better.

Furthermore, if Katherine provides half of the thrills she brought in the premiere episode, then this season will undoubtedly be one of shocking twists. (A-)
