It was a fight to the last minute, but 'Cowboys & Aliens' won their battle against 'The Smurfs', taking in $36.4 million to top the weekend box office.
Still, the tiny blue creatures put up a tough fight and performed well-beyond expectations by pulling in $35.6 million, and although they lost the battle, they are likely to win the war in the long run.
Last week's No.1, 'Captain America: The First Avenger' took a steep hit and was down 61 percent, pulling in $25.6 million ($117.4 total in 2 weeks).
Closing out the top 5 films were: The final installment of 'Harry Potter' ($22 million) and the new romantic comedy 'Crazy, Stupid, Love' ($19.1 million).
