Movie Review: 'Seven Pounds'

12/30/2008 0
In 'Seven Pounds', Will Smith plays Ben Thomas, an IRS agent with a fateful secret that embarks on an extraordinary journey of redemption by forever changing the lives of seven strangers.

Storyline:
Will Smith's character, Ben Thomas, embarks on the journey to change the lives of seven strangers, at first, his reasons are unclear, in fact, for the better part of the movie you don't even know if Ben is a good guy or bad guy, but its very clear that he has a secret.

The movie continues to turn the tables on you, just when you've made up in your mind that Ben is a good guy, the roles reverse, when you find out he's not only lied about his profession, but also his name.

Towards the end, is where it is revealed that Ben is on this mission to help these people, in honor of an accident at his hands that cost seven lives, furthermore, Ben doesn't want to just help anyone, he's very forceful that their good people.

The latter part of the movie, does tend to become a little predictable, in fact, I knew how and why he would take his own life before any of the events occurred.

Acting:
As always, Will Smith delivers big time, as his character goes through an array of emotions, Smith brilliantly conquers them all. Rosario Dawson, also brings a raw emotion, vulnerability, and realism to her character, Emily Posa, and easily delivers the performance of her career.

Ben and Emily's relationship, is the heart of the movie, as Ben reluctantly falls in love with her though it was obviously not in the plans for him, made very clear by his attempt to distance his affection for her.

You root for Ben and Emily, and just when your dreams finally become a reality, Ben does the ultimate sacrifice and gives up his life to save hers.

That's not to say the movie doesn't end with an happy ending, because it proves to be just that as Emily and Ezra (Woody Harrelson), a blind man that had trouble talking to women, end with an emotional hug, leading you to believe they will end up together.

That along with the six other lives Ben change, make it evidently clear, that he's not the bad guy that you might originally think, in fact, he's almost like an angel saving lives and mending fences.

Direction & Visual:
Gabriele Muccino, who previously directed Smith in 'A Pursuit to Happyness', does a good job of actively capturing and displaying the wide range of emotions in a way that doesn't take away from the project or make you feel, in the least bit, shortchanged.

Overall:
The movie was panned by critics, which really doesn't mean anything because they tend to pan a lot of good movies and praise a bulk of the boring ones, but I found the movie extremely enjoyable and entertaining. Smith charms from the time he graces the screen until he makes his dramatic exit, proving why audiences flock to his movies continuously.

CB's Top 10 Albums Of 2008

12/29/2008 0

  1. Coldplay - 'Viva La Vida'
  2. Alicia Keys - 'As I Am'
  3. Britney Spears - 'Circus'
  4. Carrie Underwood - 'Carnival Ride'
  5. Solange - 'Sol-Angel and the Hadley St. Dreams'
  6. Ashanti - 'The Declaration'
  7. T.I. - 'Paper Trail'
  8. Jesse McCartney - 'Departure'
  9. Brandy - 'Human'
  10. Jennifer Hudson - 'Jennifer Hudson

Technically, Alicia and Carrie's albums were released in late 2007, but given a bulk of their promotion of the albums was received in 2008, their albums qualify. Listenable qualities were also taken into effect, like with Estelle and even Brandy, their albums scored higher than Ashanti or T.I. in the album reviews, unfortunately their albums fall victim to the once a week or month curses for me, meaning though critically great its just not an album I can bring myself to listen to every day. Kind of like 'The Color Purple' is one of my favorite movies, but its still not a movie that I could bear to watch every single day.

Eva Longoria Parker opens up about her relationship with husband Tony Parker in Glamour magazine's February 2009 "Man Issue".

On her type:
"I think sometimes women are stuck in a type. I've never dated the same type. I fall in love with personalities, and they come in different packages."

On her relationship:
"Tony and I would love to be together forever. But the only way you get to forever is one day at a time."

On who is the "flower" and who is the "gardener" in her marriage to Tony Parker:
"I'm the gardener. I definitely nurture. [My husband] is the flower. But there are times when Tony takes care of me-in an emotional sense, like, 'OK, let me take the reins on this one.' But I love to take care of him. I'm really a very fifties housewife."

On being a housewife:
"I love having dinner ready and making sure his clothes are ironed and that he's packed and ready when he goes on road trips."

On adding her husbands name after marriage:
"Tony didn't care either way. I love that tradition, too -- it's romantic."

Ashanti - 'The Way That I Love You'

The main ingredient of an great video is to leave the audience wanting more, and no other artist has a knack for doing that more than Ashanti (at least when it comes to videos).

Directed by Kevin Bray, who also directs episodes for the 'Law & Order' and 'CSI' franchises, her stunning video for 'The Way That I Love You' premiered way back in February and still standouts among the crowded videos that premiered in the latter 10 months. Taking the 'Snapped'/woman scorned concept and placing it to this song was simply a match made in heaven, since the song was extremely emotional.

The greatest thing about the video is that it let's you decide the ending: Did she kill him? Did he kill her? Did she walk away? Was it just a dream? The ending was literally up to you and that's was one of the thing that made this an outstanding video.

Carrie Underwood - 'Just A Dream'

I've often said that Carrie Underwood is like the Beyonce of country music, everyone else just takes a back seat to her, and though Rihanna and Taylor Swift, have proved to be competition for both, the statement still remains in tact (for me). 'Just A Dream', is hands down one of the best country songs released this year, and the fact that it or her album aren't nominated for Grammy's is criminally wrong. As for the video, it is an emotional, gut pounding video that visually depicts the song extremely well. Country, just doesn't get much better than this.

Beyonce Steals Again

12/28/2008 0
The song originally called 'Smack Into You' was written for Jon McLaughlins sophomore album 'Ok Now' by Tricky Stewart and The-Dream. Though, the song was later scrapped from the album, Jon did perform the song live on his summer/fall tour. Not letting an amazing song go to waste, it was presented to Beyonce and changed to 'Smash Into You'. Check out Jon's version below:

The problem with this is obviously not her being given the track after Jon axed it, but the problem is Beyonce's name has been tacked on as a writer and this makes it very clear that she wrote absolutely nothing.

I just don't know why she continues to try to brand herself as a writer, when she's obviously not, and these cases coming out of the woodwork are only hurting her image not helping it.

Enough is enough, Step Your Game Up.

Album Review: Plies - 'Da REAList'

12/28/2008 0
Fresh off the gold status of his sophomore album, 'Definition Of Real', which featured the mega hit, 'Bust It Baby (Part 2)' featuring Ne-Yo. Plies is back with his third album, 'Da REAList', which marks the Florida based rapper's third full length release in just under 16 months.

For the most part, the effort seems to stick to an traditional Plies album, as he once again conquers the topics of sex, goons, and family, unfortunately, like in the past, that just doesn't prove to be enough.

The lead single, 'Put It On Ya', as well as the J.R. produced, 'Want It, Need It', which each receive assistance from newcomer Chris J and R&B songstress Ashanti respectively, are both winners, however, its the featured guests that steer the tracks to that status not Plies.

The striking, 'Family Straight', is where Plies' emotion shines through in a way that the rapper rarely showcases, in fact, it makes such an interesting, compelling argument that you can't help, but feel for him. 'Heard of Me', where Plies establishes that he isn't willing to compromise himself to be successful, also shows another trait that you can't help, but admire.

The Sean Garrett, 'Street Light', is another track on the grounds of solid.

Unfortunately, the bulk of the album is easily a miss, mostly because of the extremely monogamous subject matter.

Put simply, Plies isn't a great rapper, he isn't even a good one, but he does come across straight forward and to the point, which makes him easy to relate to, still it doesn't camouflage, the fact, that he was retaliating the same thing over all 16 tracks.

A better effort than his debut, worse than his sophomore, but still in signature Plies format, so if you enjoyed his previous releases, then this one should follow suit.

Rihanna - 'Disturbia'

In my original posting of the video, the word brilliant came into play, and though the song remains in the pits (at least for me), the video more than made up for it's lackluster qualities. Everything about this video was top notch, the costumed fashion, the over the top makeup, and Rihanna looked breathtaking. The video helped define why Rihanna is currently at the top of her game (despite having minimal talent), because she's brave and isn't afraid to take a risk and its definitely well worth it when it pays off like this.

Jennifer Aniston Leads `Marley' To $37M Weekend

12/28/2008 0
Hollywood had a happy holiday with a huge Christmas weekend as movies from Jennifer Aniston and Owen Wilson, Brad Pitt and Cate Blanchett and Adam Sandler all opened strongly.

Even Tom Cruise scored solidly in an eye patch and a German World War II uniform.

Aniston and Wilson's dog tale "Marley & Me" debuted at No. 1 with $37 million in weekend ticket sales and a total of $51.7 million since opening Christmas Day, according to estimates Sunday from distributor 20th Century Fox.

Disney's Sandler comedy "Bedtime Stories" came in second for the weekend with $28.1 million and $38.6 million since it debuted on Christmas.

Paramount's "Benjamin Button," a romantic fantasy with Pitt and Blanchett, ran a close third with $27 million for the weekend. The film has grossed $39 million since premiering Christmas Day.

MGM's "Valkyrie," starring Cruise as a German officer plotting to kill Adolf Hitler, had a No. 4 debut weekend of $21.5 million and took in $30 million since opening on Christmas.

Rounding out the holiday rush of new wide releases was Lionsgate's action thriller "The Spirit," which came in at No. 9 with $6.5 million over the weekend and $10.4 million since its Christmas debut.

"Marley & Me" was based on John Grogan's best-seller about a couple going through the ups and downs of marriage with their mischievous dog in tow. The holiday timing was ideal for a story about an adorable pup, said 20th Century Fox distribution executive Bert Livingston.

"It's an all-audience picture, ages 8 to 80. That's who's coming," Livingston said. "This is a movie about life, love and family. It's what people want to see now."

Audiences wanted to see pretty much everything over the holiday weekend. Revenues had plunged the previous two weekends, but Hollywood ended the year on a high note as the top 12 movies took in $182.5 million, up 8 percent from the same weekend in 2007.

"It's a very strong finish to the year," said Paul Dergarabedian, president of box-office tracker Media By Numbers. "Audiences are really enjoying the movies in the marketplace right now."

For the year, revenues are running a fraction behind the pace of 2007, when the box office hit a record $9.7 billion. Factoring in higher admission prices, the number of tickets sold is lagging 5 percent behind last year's total, according to Media By Numbers.

"Benjamin Button" and other Academy Awards contenders packed theaters. Miramax's acclaimed drama "Doubt" expanded nationwide after two weekends of limited release, pulling in $5.7 million to finish at No. 10.

Paramount Vantage's "Revolutionary Road," a domestic drama reuniting "Titanic" stars Leonardo DiCaprio and Kate Winslet, had a huge $192,000 debut in just three theaters, averaging $64,000 per screen.

Warner Bros. expanded Clint Eastwood's vigilante drama "Gran Torino" to more theaters as the film continues to draw big crowds with $2.4 million in just 84 cinemas, a per-theater average of $29,048.

By comparison, "Marley & Me" had a theater average of $10,632 on 3,480 screens, "Button" had $9,036 on 2,988 screens and "Valkyrie" averaged $7,942 on 2,711 screens.

Two Fox Searchlight films, "Slumdog Millionaire" and "The Wrestler," and Universal's "Frost/Nixon" also were among Oscar prospects doing strong business.

"Awards buzz doesn't hurt," said Rob Moore, vice chairman of Paramount, which released "Benjamin Button," featuring Pitt as a man who ages backward. "We always felt it's an incredibly compelling movie and worthy of attention at the end of the year. So far, that has been going very well."

"Benjamin Button," "Doubt" and "Frost/Nixon" lead contenders for the Jan. 11 Golden Globes with five nominations each.

Estimated ticket sales for Friday through Sunday at U.S. and Canadian theaters, according to Media By Numbers LLC. Final figures will be released Monday.

1. "Marley & Me," $37 million.
2. "Bedtime Stories," $28.1 million.
3. "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," $27 million.
4. "Valkyrie," $21.5 million.
5. "Yes Man," $16.5 million.
6. "Seven Pounds," $13.4 million.
7. "The Tale of Despereaux," $9.4 million.
8. "The Day the Earth Stood Still," $7.9 million.
9. "The Spirit," $6.5 million.
10. "Doubt," $5.7 million.

New Music: Ciara - ‘Diva’ (Beyoncé Cover)

12/28/2008 0
Ciara starts the trend by being the first major pop star to remix Beyonce’s 'Diva' for her Fantasy Ride mixtape, the prequel to her third studio album of the same name. Check it out below:

I've repeatedly said that 'Diva' was rubbish, mainly because it feels like Beyonce is trying to be something she isn't, in efforts to get a hit record, which is obviously going to be the end result. That said, I have to say I actually prefer Ciara on the track rather than Beyonce, because it doesn't come off so forced with her.

Jennifer Aniston Tops Brad Pitt With All-Time Best Christmas Opening

12/26/2008 0
Jennifer Aniston's latest film beat out ex-husband Brad Pitt's at the box office, scoring the all-time best Christmas Day opening.

Jen's new romantic comedy, "Marley & Me," based on the bestselling novel about a loveable but incorrigible Labrador Retriever, opened at all all-time Christmas No. 1 with $14.75 million in ticket sales, according to preliminary box office numbers. The previous record was held by "Ali" with 10.2 million.

Meanwhile Brad's film "The Curious Case Of Benjamin Button" followed in second with $11.8 million.

Although Jen's movie won the 100-yard dash of opening day, "Benjamin Button" will likely have more longevity on the long road towards Oscar night.

In third was Adam Sandler's "Bedtime Stories" which earned $10.4 million in sales, followed by "Valkyrie" starring Tom Cruise with $8.5 million. Jim Carrey's "Yes Man" rounded out the top 5 with $5.9 million.

Eartha Kitt Passes Away

12/26/2008 1
Groundbreaking actress and the sultry singer of the stylishly sexy Christmas standard "Santa Baby," Eartha Kitt, died on Christmas Day in New York City, her publicist confirmed to CNN.

Kitt, 81, had been treated for colon cancer. Her daughter Kitt Shapiro was by her side at the time of her death.

Known primarily for singing in her distinctively raspy voice and purring like a cat as Catwoman on the '60s TV series Batman, Kitt was a star of stage, the small and big screen and music. She was nominated for three Tony awards, two Grammy awards and two Emmys, according to her official Web site.

A performer to the very end, Kitt taped a PBS special in Chicago six weeks ago that is set to air in February, CNN reports.

Born Dirt Poor
Leaving the cotton fields of South Carolina at the age of 4 to go live with an aunt in New York City's Harlem, Kitt began her career after she auditioned on a dare for the Katherine Dunham Dance Troupe – and landed a spot as a featured dancer and vocalist.

Touring Europe, she built a name for herself, then became famous in America when she appeared in the Broadway revue New Faces of 1952 – where she introduced "Santa Baby," as well as her other trademark songs, "C'est Si Bon" and "Monotonous."

Honored with a star on Hollywood's Walk of Fame in 1960, Kitt became infamous for speaking out against American involvement in the Vietnam War while she was at a White House luncheon in 1968. It took a good 10 years for her career to recover, and she headlined on Broadway in the musical Timbuktu!

An Icon
She also became a staple on the cabaret circuit, and toured as the Wicked Witch in a national touring production of The Wizard of Oz, based on the classic 1939 movie.

Among her other accomplishments, she wrote three autobiographies. Only last week, "Santa Baby" was certified gold.

According to her bio, Kitt lived in Connecticut near her daughter and four grandchildren. They survive her – as does her reputation as an icon.

Our sincerest condolences.

New Kelly Clarkson Single Due Next Month

12/23/2008 0
Kelly Clarkson's new single, "My Life Would Suck Without You," will hit U.S. radio outlets Jan. 19. The track will introduce her fourth, as-yet-untitled studio album, due March 17 from RCA.

Although a track list has yet to be announced, Clarkson has worked with producer/songwriter Dr. Luke and OneRepublic leader Ryan Tedder on new material.

The album will be the follow-up to 2007's "My December," which has sold 780,000 copies in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

Clarkson feuded with RCA exec Clive Davis over her desire to write her own material for the album, on the heels of her smash 2004 album "Breakaway," which featured a number of co-writes with experienced songwriters.

A planned arena tour was scrapped just before "My December" came out due to lower-than-expected ticket sales, and was reconfigured for smaller venues a few months later.

Last fall, Clarkson signed with manager Narvel Blackstock, who paired her with his wife, Reba McEntire, for a successful co-headlining tour in early 2008.

New Music: Toni Braxton - 'Get Loose'

I like Toni, when she's actually singing, in the vain of 'Love Shoulda Bought You Home' and 'Unbreak My Heart', songs that were actually worthy of her voice, sadly this is just the opposite.
