MOVIE REVIEW: 'REMEMBER ME'

SYNOPSIS & DEVELOPMENT

The story begins in 1991 with a young Ally witnessing her mom being robbed and killed at gunpoint by two men at the subway station. It then transfers to ten years later, where she is now a college student played by Emilie de Ravin that lives with her police officer father Sgt. Neil Craig (played by Chris Cooper).

Robert Pattinson enters the film as Tyler Hawkins, a rebellious young man, who is still grieving the death of his brother Michael and houses resentment towards his business focused father, who is portrayed spot-on by Pierce Brosnan.

After getting into a late-night altercation with Sgt. Craig that leads to the arrest of him and his best friend Aidan Hall (Tate Ellington), Aidan devices a plan to have Tyler date Ally as a tactic to seek revenge over Craig, but when Tyler and Ally unexpectedly find solace through the sadness that has affected each of their lives, the plan completely loses its ground.

Tyler and Ally fight hard for the love they share with each other and even though it doesn't get to fully run its course (a fact that makes the title all the more significant), it is capped off by a powerful ending that occurs on a historic date.

PERFORMANCES

While the film has placed many tests before Pattinson as to whether he can truly be referred to as a leading man, the main question was could he convincingly play a character other than Edward Cullen. Truth be told, in the beginning stages it's hard to picture him as anyone other than his cold-blooded alter ego, but as the film progresses, Pattinson (who also executive-produces the film) wins you over with his charm and believability as Tyler.

He showcases a perfect blend of anger towards his father, love for his sister Caroline (Ruby Jerins) and Ally, while still abundantly revealing the depth and regret he feels for his brother Michael.

Rounded out by nice performance from his co-stars Ravin, Brosnan, Cooper and the lovable Jerins, acting is one of the film's strongest assets.

DIRECTION & VISUAL

Directed by Allen Coulter, who has mostly worked in television, he relies on Pattinson's pretty face by upping the number of close-up shots, yet still manages to effectively let the story unfold in a clean-cut and polished manner.

Accompanied by a poignant score courtesy of Marcelo Zarvos and nice cinematography work from Jonathan Freeman , the film is extremely earnest.

FINAL VERDICT

'Remember Me' is a story that you very much want to like, if for no other reason than to witness the mesmerizing glare of its star Robert Pattinson, but at times, its a story that plays it too safe and almost becomes forgettable until the shocking turn of events at the closing.

Still, it very much resonates with you and the ending proves to be just enough fire to bring you to tears and leave the cinemas without feeling shortchanged.
