In the premiere episode of ‘Lone Star’, a new drama set in the backdrop of Texas, newcomer James Wolk stars as Bob (or Robert), a smart and young con man living two different lives with two equally as beautiful women.
Trained by his father John (David Keith) since his youth, Bob has honed his skills of manipulation to a magnitude beyond his father, but unlike his parenting predecessor, this isn’t the life that Bob truly desires.
He is seeking “something real” and gets a glimpse of it through his relationships with Lindsay (Eloise Mumford) and Cat (Adrianne Palicki).
As Bob, he is cashing in on investment schemes and dating town girl Lindsay, while as Robert, he is married to Cat and working his way through her father’s company much to the dismay of his overly-jealous brothers-in-law Trammell Thatcher (Mark Deklin) and Drew Thatcher (Bryce Johnson).
Close to closing both deals, yet on the brink of getting busted, Bob devises a plan that will not only keep his path to freedom clear, but also allow him to continue his relationship with the two women, who have come to mean the world to him.
FINAL VERDICT
Though equipped with elements of a classic soap drama, ‘Lone Star’, which was created by Kyle Killen, is original, clever and easily sets itself apart from the pack by focusing a story that we have yet to see.
Wolk is both good looking and charming as the perfect con man, and despite some bland moments, he evokes enough sensitivity and compassion to make an unlikable character appear to be appealing and engaging. (A)
