TV REVIEW: 'HAWAII', A THRILLING RUSH

TV

Monday night saw the premiere of ‘Hawaii Five-O’, an updated version of the 1968 series starring Jack Lord, which ran for twelve successful seasons.

In the new reboot, Alex O’Loughlin stars as Detective Steve McGarrett, an esteemed Naval officer, who returns to Hawaii to avenge his father’s murder.

With the approval and backing of the governor, McGarrett forms a team including fresh and hungry detective Danny Williams (Scott Caan), former cop Chin Ho Kelly (Daniel Dae Kim) and academy grad Kona Kalakaua (Grace Kelly).

For the most part, the pilot spends its time establishing what every good crime-solving series needs, a connection to its base characters and most importantly, the dynamics that they each share with each other.

O’Loughlin and Caan not only develop a love and hate chemistry with each other in the first episode, but it feels and plays out so genuinely that it’s hard to believe these two have actually just come in contact with one another.

There are jokes, fights and moments of real expressions that could only be defined as the establishment of a good bromance, but not to the point where you forget these are actually crime fighting and testosterone-filled guys.

Even when the episode ends with McGarrett killing his father’s murderer, there are previously surfaced clues to let you know the mystery is far from over.

FINAL VERDICT
‘Hawaii Five-O’ thrives through its developed characters, who are just as viable today as in 1968, its action-packed sequences and the mesmerizing location that adds a distinctive look and feel to the high-energy journey.

It tributes the original through the theme song and classic phrases (“Book Em, Danno”), while also beginning to establish an identity of its own. (A+)
