TV REVIEW: 'MOLLY', HEALTHY ON HUMOR

TV

In ‘Mike and Molly’, two overweight singles began to test the waters of romance, after developing a connection at an Overeaters Anonymous meeting.

Starring Billy Gardell as police officer Mike Biggs and Melissa McCarthy as elementary school teacher Molly Flynn, the series doesn’t waste time living up to its crafted demeanor and immediately begins to let the fat jokes fly.

When we initially meet Mike, he is at a restaurant ordering a skimpy meal to accommodate his latest diet, which draws jokes from his waiter Samuel (Nyambi Nyambi) and his partner in crime Carl (Reno Wilson).

Moments later, we are introduced to Molly, who is bent over an exercise bike and desperately trying to avoid the temptation of her mother’s latest baking creation.

While this all works out and provides some knee-slapping moments for the series, its greatest asset is the developing story of romance between Mike and Molly, who each feared they might spend the rest of their lives alone.

Added in likable supporting cast including the always over-the-top Swoosie Kurtz, Katy Mixon and the previously mentioned scene-stealer Reno Wilson, and ‘Mike and Molly’ actually starts its journey out on the right path.

FINAL VERDICT
‘Mike and Molly’, is filled with humor, and despite often making you feel bad for laughing at people who struggle with weight issue instead of laughing with them, you truly believe you are witnessing the beginning of a classic love story. (B)
