Drake Tops Billboard 200 With 535,000 Surprise Albums Sold

2/19/2015 0
Drake photo drake-publicity-2013-billboard-650.jpg

Congratulations are in order for Drake. After only three days of sells, the rap heavyweight moved an astounding 535,000 units of his unexpected mixtape, 'If You're Reading This It's Too Late', to land the fourth chart-topping release of his career.

With the surprise release, he becomes only the second rapper in the history of the charts to watch their first four full-length albums debut at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart (DMX was first), and scores the second-largest opening week of the past year, behind only the debut of Taylor Swift's monster '1989' album (1.27 million). Get more details on the charting via Billboard beneath:

Drake's Surprise Album Debuts at No. 1 on Billboard 200

Drake's surprise album If You're Reading This It's Too Late blasts in at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 chart as expected, easily scoring the hip-hop star his fourth chart-topper.

The Billboard 200 chart ranks the most popular albums of the week based on multi-metric consumption, which includes traditional album sales, track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA). If You're Reading This It's Too Late moved 535,000 units in the week ending Feb. 15, according to Nielsen Music, with pure album sales comprising 495,000 of that figure -- all from digital downloads.

Industry forecasters had projected the set to sell over 500,000 copies, but it fell just short of that half-million threshold. Still, it's a remarkable start for an album that arrived with no notice, was sold only through digital retail, is termed a mixtape by Drake (and not a proper studio album) and only had a little more than three days of sales powering its debut. The new set was released in the evening of Thursday, Feb. 12 through Young Money/Cash Money/Republic Records. The tracking week ended at the close of business on Sunday, Feb. 15. A physical release for the album on CD or vinyl has not been announced.

If You're Reading This It's Too Late follows Drake's three earlier No. 1-debuting albums, which also happened to be his first three full-length efforts: Thank Me Later (released in 2010), Take Care (2011) and Nothing Was the Same (2013).

Drake's fourth studio album, Views From the 6, announced last July, is due out later this year.

Academy Award-nominated actor Will Smith returns to the big screen next weekend with 'Focus', a con-man thriller co-starring Margot Robbie, and he is certainly hoping for different results than his last effort - the cataclysmic disaster of 'After Earth', which he cites as the most painful failure of his career in the March 2015 issue of Esquire magazine.

"Wild Wild West was less painful than After Earth because my son [Jaden Smith] was involved in After Earth and I led him into it. That was excruciating. What I learned from that failure is how you win. I got reinvigorated after the failure of After Earth. I stopped working for a year and a half. I had to dive into why it was so important for me to have number-one movies. And I never would have looked at myself in that way," the 46-year-old stud tells the magazine.

Before continuing, "After Earth comes out, I get the box-office numbers on Monday and I was devastated for about twenty-four minutes, and then my phone rang and I found out my father had cancer. That put it in perspective—viciously." Wow! Peep two more shots from his shoot below:

'Fifty Shades of Grey', starring Jamie Dornan and Dakota Johnson, owned the box-office over the weekend with over sixty percent of moviegoers opting to see E.L. James' raunchy novel play out on the big screen. The film, which cost about $40 million to make, shattered February records with a $93 million opening in the United States and $266.6 million worldwide.

It took in $85.17 million over the first three days and not only did it destroy weekend records for Valentine's Day and Presidents Day, but the film has also became the highest February debut ever, replacing 'Passion of the Christ', which raked in a robust $83.9 million in 2004.

Internationally, the film also played well with a massive $173.6 million from 58 territories, which saw it open at No.1 in 54 locations and set records in 13 of those. Get more details beneath:

'Fifty Shades' Hits $93M Over Four-Days; Final B.O. Actuals

Rentrak has reported box office actuals for Presidents Day weekend of February 13-16 with Universal Focus Features’ Fifty Shades Of Grey coming in a hair higher with a 3-day of $85.17M, and a slightly lower four-day of $93M. Among R-rated 3-day openings, Fifty Shades owns the fourth best of all-time, with 2003’s Matrix Reloaded still tops with $91.77M, and as mentioned previously, the feature adaptation of E.L. James bestselling novel is the top opening ever for a February release. 20th Century Fox’s Kingsman: Secret Service maintains its $36.2M three-day, but is slightly below its 4-day prediction yesterday with an actual of $41.76M. Final total tickets sales to date for 2015 for the period of January 1-February 16 is $1.489B, +10% over the same frame in 2014. Total four-day domestic weekend tally: $246.16M, still an all-time record for the holiday, that +18% over the same four-day frame a year ago.

'Fifty Shades' Higher In Global Bow At $266.6M; Record R-Rated Opening Overseas

Final overseas update by Universal for Fifty Shades Of Grey shows a global weekend through Monday of $266.6M with $173.6M coming from 10,979 screens in 58 territories. It’s still the biggest February opener overseas of all-time and the second best for Universal behind Fast & Furious 6‘s $160.3M overseas bow. The E.L. James feature adaptation is No. 1 in 54 territories. Updated top weekend results include UK and Ireland $20.8M; Germany $14.1M; France $12.3M; Russia $11M; Italy $10.1M; Spain $8.7M; Brazil $8.3M; Mexico $8.1M; Australia $8M; Poland $4.7M and Argentina $3.5M. Rolling Out... The Softer Side of Kenya Moore:

We’ve watched you navigate the entertainment industry across multiple platforms; whether it’s being a businesswoman, personality, model, actress or producer. How have you been able to juggle all of that?
Juggling is definitely not easy, but I think that I have a really busy mind so I’m always thinking about what is the next project, or what is the next venture that I want to explore. I’m always thinking about my future, and so for me it’s a part of just the way I think and the way I move. I just try to stay focused and see one thing through at a time, but always have things in development all the time. And as an independent film producer, I’m used to juggling a lot of different things. It’s just sort of natural for me, I think.

As a producer, give us some insight as to what it takes to make a film.
Well, that’s a really loaded question. The hardest part if you’re doing an independent film is raising the money. If you’re doing a studio film, it’s to get a studio to want to buy it amongst thousands of scripts and producers and directors that they may already know or are already looking at. It’s nearly impossible. Only about 200 to 250 movies get made per year in the studio world. In terms of indies, with the new cameras that they have now, a lot of people will go out and make their own project but they are not really theater quality or they don’t have high production quality but they can be made. So there are other outlets for production now [as far as] distribution, I mean. The Internet is a great resource to get your product out there, but the hardest thing is to actually get someone to say yes or actually get someone to give you money for your film.

How do you use your celebrity to help support your other projects?
It’s an excellent question, actually. I think that whenever you are very visible and in high demand, everybody wants to work with you, so you can get into any door. You can make one phone call and people always return your call and people want to meet with you. They want to be in business with you because you’re already successful and they know that the more visible that you are, [the more likely it is that the] eyes on you are potential supporters of yours and of your products and of your projects, so it helps tremendously. It opens every door imaginable for you.

So do you also have to be careful with your visibility?
Any celebrity or any person that is known, you’re always going to be a target to a degree for people. Number one, your haters, they’ll come out in droves just to say I didn’t like that, which they probably never even saw it to begin with. … I’ve seen it all, and for me it’s just always [about] keeping your own integrity and that’s just the best you can do.

As a celebrity, how do you reconcile that there are some people that will love you, and some people who will hate you, no matter what you do?
You can’t obsess about it yourself either, that is just who those people are. You can’t obsess about people who obsess about you in a negative or a positive way. Of course, it feels good when people support you and they’re positive. When they are negative you just have to be of the mindset that you know what, those people have their own issues and they’re just looking for someone to lash out at and you just happen to be the one that they picked today or that year or that month. I don’t think there’s anything that you can do about it. You can’t change how other people behave, perceive, treat you. You just have to worry about yourself and that’s all I really do.

Has it ever gotten to you?
Of course. I mean you know I’m one of those people especially [before] I started “Real Housewives” I was never attacked in the press or no one ever said negative things about me, I was just kind of like a version of America’s sweetheart. No one really bothered me and I never bothered anybody else, and then that changed when I came on board such a powerful machine like “Real Housewives.” There are people and our fans that are very invested in the show and they make up their mind about you right away, and unfortunately, it can go either way and I’ve been someone in the beginning that was very polarizing — either you love me or you hate me. … In the beginning, yeah, it did really bother me because I wasn’t used to it and I just had to stop reading the blogs, stop reading the comments, I just stopped all of that and it was a lot better for me. Now I feel like I’ve just come into my own and so many amazing things are happening for me. … I have all these calls from people who want to work with me who don’t care about all of that stuff that they read; they just know that I’m doing what I can do and that I’m a talented girl. That is what I focus on and that is what the really biggest reward has been in this whole process.

Talk about your future as you come into your own and work on the next stage of Kenya’s life. What are your next steps?
For me everything is about the future of my family. Every decision that I’m making right now is about securing my brand, parlaying that into what that means to family down the road. When “Real Housewives” is over … when the last show is over, what will I have left? At the end of the day, I am an aspirational brand that people want to buy into. People want beautiful hair, beautiful skin and they want to feel good about themselves — you know, workout gear and workout videos and things that just make you feel good when you see more products, and that’s just what I’m building to — and that’s not only securing a future for myself but for my family and my kids.

With some subtle references (See: Airplane Necklace), leggy singer Taylor Swift makes it clear that "Style", the third single from her multi-plainum '1989' album, is about her ex-boyfriend Harry Styles of One Direction. As if the title didn't already give that away.

The video, which was directed by Kyle Newman and stars model Dominic Sherwood as her love interest, is one of her most cinematic visuals to date and the skillful play with various images here is enthralling to watch. It also goes hand-in-hand with the single as it serves as sort of a recollection of past memories and a love that will always remain relevant in some form.

Rihanna Swims With Sharks In Golden 'Harper's Bazaar' Shoot

Rihanna plays golden goddess and swims with sharks for the March 2015 issue of Harper's Bazaar, where she dishes on learning to swim with sharks, how she developed thick skin and her glamorous red carpet style. Read some excerpts for her gorgeous cover feature beneath:

On Swimming With Sharks: "I try my best to avoid the sharks of life, but I have had my share of experiences with them, and in those cases I just have to handle them accordingly. But I do not swim with sharks … sharks swim with sharks."

On Developing Thick Skin: "This skin has been developing since my first day at school. It didn’t happen after fame; I couldn’t survive fame if I didn’t already have it. So sometimes the toughest thing in life is to be vulnerable. I’m not generally a sensitive person, but I tend to be more sensitive toward others and what they’re going through. I don’t know if that’s the healthiest thing, but it’s the truth."

On Her Red Carpet Style: "The way I dress depends on how I feel. I never have to psych myself up. Usually it just feels like it works. My favorite red-carpet looks are usually the ones I get to help design: the Adam Selman Swarovski crystal dress at the CFDAs, the Stella McCartney all-white dress at the Met Gala, and the Adam Selman white jersey dress from the VMAs. But the red Azzedine Alaïa at the Grammys is also one of my favorites. I have a job that requires quite a lot of glam, and I have a great team that helps me."

After tackling the Super Bowl last Sunday, Katy Perry was back on stage at tonight's 57th Annual Grammy Awards in Los Angeles, California, and she used her performance of "By The Grace of God" to tackle the continually troubling issue of domestic violence.

The song is one of the highlights from her nominated album 'Prism', but the 30-year-old superstar, who looked stunning in white, struggled with the performance and her less than stellar vocal showing overshadowed the important issue that she was trying so hard to drive home. The effort is applauded though. Watch her performance and judge for yourself beneath:

Two geniuses. That accurately sums up living legends Kanye West and Madonna, and while they remain two of the most polarizing figures in music, there performances at the 57th Annual Grammy Awards also showed why they remain two of the best.

West, back on the stage for music's biggest night for the first time in six year, delivered a performance of his Paul McCartney-assisted hit "Only One" alone, despite the legendary Beatle being in the building, but even with minimal props, he captivated.

Madonna, on the other hand, showed that there can only be one queen and she isn't quite ready to relinquish that title as she showed with her eye-catching performance of "Living For Love", from her upcoming studio album. 56 and still killing it. Watch their performance beneath:
