Album Review: Soulja Boy - 'iSouljaBoyTellem'

Soulja Boy Tell'em hit the ground running promoting his debut album, 'Souljboytellem.com', which led to record setting performances for ringtones (more than 5.3 million downloads), YouTube views (over 300,000,000 views) and an incredible seven-week run at the top of the Hot 100 chart with the Grammy-nominated single 'Crank That (Soulja Boy)'.

That alone easily made you take notice, whether you wanted to or not.

First off, let me be the first to admit, I go in listening to a Soulja Boy album with a little dismay, but given this is a review, as always, I'm forced to shove my personal feelings for the artist to the side and judge what's most important...the music.

Sadly, in this case, that still doesn't leave much to plead Soulja Boy's case.

'Kiss Me Thru the Phone' and 'Yamaha Mama', assisted by Sammie and Sean Kingston respectively, make the most striking arguments of defense. The radio friendly tracks are actually pretty solid.

The bad starts with, 'Bird Walk, which was a lackluster attempt to recreate, 'Crank That (Soulja Boy)', and just like its predecessor, the track fails to amaze. Unfortunately, the bad ceases to end, with the likes of, 'Wit My Yums On', 'Eazy', 'Booty Got Swag', 'Go Head, among others.

Overall, the set is beyond disappointing, over the hills of repetitive, and it has to be the most arrogant, self-indulging set, since T.I.'s 'Paper Trail', but at least T.I.'s cockiness has some kind of merit, here that doesn't exist AT ALL. Mainly, because not one of the 16 tracks has any since of emotion, realness, or even a hint of anything other than the superficial.

Put simply, Soulja Boy is still the clown in the music industry, and unfortunately for him, unlike in the circus, here that position is just a temporary spot.

0.5 out of 5

  1. Lol @ 0.5/5 - I didn't even download this album because I was expecting it to be crap so I can believe you when you rate it so low.
After finding out what the lyrics to Crank That meant, I lost all respect for him.
    Good informative review again though!
