Last night's controversial moment came when Kanye West interrupted Taylor Swift, who was accepting her first Moonman, to declared that Beyonce's "Single Ladies" deserved the trophy over Swift's "You Belong To Me".
Mr. West, who was removed from the building after his rant, is no stranger to speaking his mind and refusing to hold his tongue. At the 2007 VMAs, he publicly expressed his disapproval of Britney Spears opening the show, claiming she had no musical relevance in the prior year, and he furthered his actions by throwing a full out rant, when he didn't win awards he felt he deserved. He also publicly attacked George W. Bush, who was president at the time, by saying he didn't care or a show a concern for black people during Hurrican Katrina.
That said, there is a fine line between speaking your mind and being an ignorant asshole to a teen star, who seems to genuinely enjoy and appreciate every moment that is bestowed upon her.
According to Rolling Stone, Taylor was seen crying hysterically backstage, which made it convenient that the first part of her performance was prerecorded, and they also stated that Taylor's mom and Mr. West shared words following the encounter.
If I'm being honest, Swift's video doesn't emerge as the standout among the nods, but that in no way gives Kanye West the right to take that moment away from her. Furthermore, it pisses me off that this foolishness is now taking center stage over the incredible tribute Janet Jackson delivered in memory of her brother.
Beyoncé tried to compensate for his rudeness during her Video of the Year win by inviting Swift back on stage to make her acceptance speech, which according to Rolling Stone was arranged in advance by the singer's father/manager Matther Knowles.
West released a statement via his blog:
I'M SOOOOO SORRY TO TAYLOR SWIFT AND HER FANS AND HER MOM. I SPOKE TO HER MOTHER RIGHT AFTER AND SHE SAID THE SAME THING MY MOTHER WOULD'VE SAID. SHE IS VERY TALENTED! I LIKE THE LYRICS ABOUT BEING A CHEERLEADER AND SHE'S IN THE BLEACHERS! ........................ I'M IN THE WRONG FOR GOING ON STAGE AND TAKING AWAY FROM HER MOMENT!................. BEYONCE'S VIDEO WAS THE BEST OF THIS DECADE!!!! I'M SORRY TO MY FANS IF I LET YOU GUYS DOWN!!!! I'M SORRY TO MY FRIENDS AT MTV. I WILL APOLOGIZE TO TAYLOR 2MRW. WELCOME TO THE REAL WORLD!!!! EVERYBODY WANNA BOOOOO ME BUT I'M A FAN OF REAL POP CULTURE!!! NO DISRESPECT BUT WE WATCHIN' THE SHOW AT THE CRIB RIGHT NOW CAUSE ... WELL YOU KNOW!!!! I'M STILL HAPPY FOR TAYLOR!!!! BOOOYAAAWWWW!!!! YOU ARE VERY VERY TALENTED!!! I GAVE MY AWARDS TO OUTKAST WHEN THEY DESERVED IT OVER ME... THAT'S WHAT IT IS!!!!!!! I'M NOT CRAZY YALL, I'M JUST REAL. SORRY FOR THAT!!! I REALLY FEEL BAD FOR TAYLOR AND I'M SINCERELY SORRY!!! MUCH RESPECT!!!!!
Lastly, declaring "Single Ladies" as one of the best videos of all-time or the decade, quickly falls into the pile of overstating things. One of the year's best is undoubtedly a better assessment.
