The Top 7 contestants vying to be the next American Idol, took to the stage last night to perform music from the movies.
Due to the eight minute time overage last week, the judges were only allowed to judge in pairs (Simon and Paula, Randy and Kara), and the contestants were mentored under the direction of Quentin Tarantino.
Allison Iraheta - "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing"
I've often thought that the Diane Warren penned, "I Don't Want To Miss A Thing", by Aerosmith, is one of the most beautifully written tracks ever, so when I found out rocker Allison was singing the track, I immediately felt a sense of dismay and rightfully so. Although she hits the notes, I felt she tried to do too much with it and messed up the beautiful simplicity of the song. The rock vibe, for me, just didn't match the track, but Team Cowell-Abdul love it and Simon even said that she's the only girl in the competition that really truly has a shot at winning, which I can fully reaffirm.
Anoop Desai - "Everything I Do"
Anoop chose the classic big ballad by Bryan Adams and surprisingly, he pulled it off with his emotionally driven vocals. As I previously stated, ballads are Anoop's strong suit, which is my problem with Anoop, because if you're a singer thats only capable of delivering on these types of performances, then it makes you come off extremely one dimensional. That said, a nice performance from Anoop this week.
Adam Lambert - "Born To Be Wild"
The thing that I like about Adam is that he offers variation, given his performances from week to week, whether disaster or not, all stand on their own as a different one of the elements he brings to the table, which is something I can't state about any other contestant. That said, when it comes to him, his performances are pretty much hit or miss, and as Simon stated, "half will like it, half will hate it". Unfortunately, I lay within the second half.
Matt Giraud - "Have You Ever Really Loved A Woman"
When it comes to Matt, the judges and I tend to be on different pages, but this week sort of slightly reunited us. He picked a really hard song to sing and taking that into consideration he did a pretty good job trying to pull it off, but it was by no means a perfect vocal. That said, what united my thoughts with the judges is that I felt, as Kara said, that him trying to flip the song into a solely R&B number, neglected to capature some of the songs key moments.
Danny Gokey - "Endless Love"
Week after week, Danny continues to prove just how vocally amazing he is, and despite starting out on shaky ground, he found his stride and delivered. Again, like I been pointing out for weeks, Danny does tend to be kind of boring, which Simon bought attention to, and we all know just being a great singer can only take you so far in a competition like this.
Kris Allen - "Falling Slowly"
Kris' performance split Team Jackson-Dioguardi, given Randy thought it was pitchy from note one and Kara deemed it one of his best moments, while I can't completely reaffirm either of their comments, I did think it was a solid showing, not bad, not great, but somewhere in between.
Lil Rounds - "The Rose"
Bad decision after bad decision, mistake after mistake, is how Lil's weeks have played out over the competition. I admire her for trying to spin the song, as opposed to last week, but the performance just didn't work. The first part was almost unbearable, given she was pitchy beyond belief, and even though the latter part was better, it was a far cry away from saving the performance.
PREDICTIONS:
Bottom 3: I think Allison, Lil, and Adam, are the contestants that truly deserve to be in the bottom three, but Matt and Anoop, will most likely join Lil, based on America's votes.
Who's Going Home: Lil Rounds, is the sole contestant that has yet to deliver a great performance during the finals. She's a gifted talented, but she doesn't have a complete grasp of who she is, and frankly we're tired of trying to watch her figure it out.
