As expected, 'Rise of the Planet of the Apes' rose above the competition by raking in a staggering $54.8 million, which now ranks as the fourth highest-grossing August opening in film history.
With that said, the James Franco-led film debut well below the 'Planet of the Apes' ($68.5 million), starring Mark Wahlberg, but remains a big win since it had to overcome a ten-year halt in the long-running franchise.
Ryan Reynolds, for the second time this summer, proved he is not capable of opening a film as 'The Change-Up', opens in fourth slot with a weak $13.5 million, falling short of the most recent body switch comedies '17 Again' ($23.7), '13 Going on 30' ($21.1) and 'Freaky Friday' ($22.2).
Closing out the top 5 films were: 'The Smurfs' in second place with $20.7 million, last week's winner 'Cowboys & Aliens' in third with $15.7 million and 'Captain America: The First Avenger' in the fifth with $13 million ($143.2 in 3 weeks).
