Beyonce Admits To Lip-Syncing & Delievers A LIVE Performance Of The National Anthem

Super Bowl XLVII (1/31/13), Beyonce

Beyonce knows how to work the media and work the media is exactly what she did at the press conference for in New Orleans on Thursday, January 31st, where the singer talked about her highly-anticipated halftime performance at Super Bowl XLVII.

The singer walked on the stage, asked the crowd to stand and belted out "The Star Spangled Banner" to cheers from the media-filled crowd. After she finished she asked the crowd, simply, "Any questions?", and revealed why she chose to use a backing track.

"I am a perfectionist. And one thing about me, I practice until my feet bleed. And I did not have time to rehearse with the orchestra. It was a live tv show and a very, very important, emotional show for me. One of my proudest moments. Due to the weather, due to the delay and lack of proper sound-check, I did not feel comfortable taking a risk. It was about the President and the Inauguration. And I wanted to make him and my country proud. So, I decided to sing along to a pre-recorded track, which is very common in the music industry. And I'm very proud of my performance."

Peep her performance and press conference, as well as, my thoughts on this, beneath:

The issue was never about whether she possessed the ability to sing the song live or not, because we all know she can sing. The problem, for me, is that she allowed this controversy to overshadow what was most important by not admitting her actions sooner.

That said, a couple of things irked me about her press conference today.

First off, she had numerous excuses for why she chose to lip-sync, but many of these excuses were invalidated by the fact that Kelly Clarkson and the other performers of the day all faced the same weather conditions and possible sounds issues that she was, yet they didn't choose to take the easy route of using a pre-recorded track.

Secondly, she said she didn't have time to rehearse, because of her Super Bowl commitments. Well then, why take on more than you can handle. Give someone else an opportunity to shine for a chance. I love and respect what Beyonce brings to the table, but at some point, you have to be willing to admit that you are not Superwoman.

Lastly, she lied by saying she "always sings live". This is simply not true, in fact, I can list numerous events and performances where she has used backing tracks to keep her from sounding out of breath and pitchy during her over-the-top and high energy performances. There was no need to lie about this when it is common knowledge amongst music fans (except for the delusional Beehive) that you utilize backing tracks.

All of that aside, this is not an attempt to attack Beyonce, because as I previously stated, I live for what she brings to the table in an industry where most artists are far too comfortable getting by on their looks alone, but wrong is wrong and right is right.

Your Thoughts?
