Katy Perry Covers 'Complex'

5/30/2009 0
Grammy-nominated singer Katy Perry appears as cover girl for the June/July 2009 issue of Complex magazine.

On Her Type:
Oh God, I don’t have a type. I guess one thing that’s the same with all of the men I’ve dated is that they’re all communicators and they’re all sensitive. I have a soft spot for musicians, a guy who can write a song or say how he feels and put it into a song, and is super poetic. Travis is really good at that, and he’s just so good at lyrics that I think that’s ultimately why I was so attracted to him. But I definitely do not have a type. You know, he’s artistic and he has that natural swagger. When he puts his hat on, that’s how he puts his hat on. He doesn’t stand in the mirror for like three hours, he just puts it on. So that’s sexy.

On Dating A Rapper, Such As, Lil' Wayne:
That might be too grindhouse for me. I think T.I.’s really cute, though. I like the guys that have this face about them, which is like…you know, adorable, and cute, and almost looks like a baby pit bull. A little pit bull is so cute, and all rappers love little pit bulls. They have to have two or three.

Chris Brown: 'I Ain't A Monster'

5/28/2009 0
For the first time since his alleged beating of Rihanna in February, 19-year-old Chris Brown is speaking out and he's chosen YouTube as his source.

The singer uploaded a grainy video recorded at Shaquille O’Neal’s home, while in the studio with Bow Wow, where he addresses his forthcoming album and declares "I Ain't A Monster".

The prime example of stupidity, in fact, I think Usher hit the nail on the head a couple months ago, when he said the singer just doesn't seem remorseful. And with that said, how can we as an audience even began to think of him as anything more than a monster, if he refuses to take any responsibility for his actions. Furthermore, any respect we had for him, which was already nearly extinct, just continues to lose its value with these worthless statements.

As for Rihanna, her team seems to be milking this situation for all its worth, with their constant tipping the paparazzi off for photo ops, but realistically, I can't say I blame them given it does keep her name out there.

T.I. Begins Serving Prison Sentence

5/26/2009 0

T.I. entered an Arkansas federal prison Tuesday to begin a year and a day sentence on a weapon charge.

The rapper made a concertlike entrance to the Forrest City low-security prison showing up late inside of a black conversion van with tinted windows.

T.I. (real name: Clifford J. Harris Jr.) was to report at noon, but the deadline passed as guards outside blocked reporters and onlookers from coming near the facility on a rural state highway.

It was not immediately clear if T.I.'s late arrival would affect his plea deal with prosecutors.

Federal prison spokeswoman Linda Thomas said the Atlanta rapper would be known inside by guards as federal prison inmate No. 59458019.

Traci Billingsley, another prison spokeswoman, said the prison had no special protections prepared for the rapper. The low-security prison has double-bunked cells and a large fenced exercise yard, where inmates in white jumpsuits could be seen Tuesday morning.

"We treat all our offenders in the same manner," Billingsley said.

T.I., 28, was arrested after trying to buy unregistered machine guns and silencers from undercover federal agents in 2007. That came after the rapper's best friend was killed following a party in Cincinnati in 2006. The rapper has said the bullets that killed his friend were meant for him.

The self-proclaimed "King of the South," T.I. had faced a maximum sentence of 10 years in prison and a $250,000 fine for each charge in his three-count indictment. However, he reached a plea deal with prosecutors after spending time on house arrest before his sentencing and speaking before community groups and high schools about the dangers of drugs, violence and guns.

Fans gathered down the road from the prison Tuesday and screamed "we love you, T.I!" when the black van pulled at the prison. Afterward, they shouted at TV cameras that "T.I. is the greatest!"

"We're still riding with the king!" yelled Porshe Tiswell, 22, of Forrest City.

Fan Eugene Smith, 24, of Forrest City defended T.I., saying the rapper feared for his life when he purchased the machine guns and silencers from federal agents.

"Somebody set him up, they snitched on him, so it's a whole different thing," Smith said. "We got to live a life, you know what I'm saying. We're out in the street life."

Upon his release, T.I. will be on probation for three years. He also must pay a $100,000 fine as part of his sentence.

His sixth album, "Paper Trail," has sold about 2 million copies and the rapper earned a Grammy for the song "Swagga Like Us" that he performed with Jay-Z. T.I. wrote the lyrics for the album while awaiting trial.

He performed Sunday in Atlanta and told the crowd he'd "see y'all in 366 days."

Album Review: Chrisette Michele - 'Epiphany'

5/26/2009 0
Nearly two years after the release of her debut album, I Am, Chrisette Michele reemerges with her sophomore effort, Epiphany.

This time with the help of Compound Entertainment, which consists of Claude Kelly, Chuck Harmony and singer/songwriter Ne-Yo, Chrisette infuses her jazz vocal styles with an elaborated Pop feel that verges on Hip-Hop/Soul.

The titled track, “Epiphany”, begins the set with her singing two key words, “it’s over”, and those very words would continue to be a recurring theme throughout the album. The track eyes the songstress finally grasping the urge and strength to leave a womanizer after being done wrong time and time again.

“Notebook”, travels into to teen territory as she writes x’s and o’s in the struggle to express just how she feels about a special person, while “What You Do”, which features Ne-Yo, sees the songstress giving an ultimatum of staying or leaving depending on how he chooses to express his feelings. The track is basically saying actions speak louder than words, which is a situation that tends to become a problem in relationships day in and day out, because actions tends to outweigh saying “I love you”, especially if you aren’t backing that statement up.

“Blame It On Me”, showcases her simply wanting out no matter what the expense, and even taking the misplaced blame for the failed relationship. Aside from that, it’s just such an impressive track and manages to roll into overdrive with her rich and emotional vocal delivery.

“All I Ever Think About”, deals with the complication of those sweet memories shared with a special person that she just can’t seem to get off her mind or heart, while “Playin’ Our Song”, moves into up-tempo territory and although a solid offering, it proves that slow cuts and ballads are just a much tighter fit with her voice.

“Another One”, deals with insecurity as she notices personality changes when her man is around a crowd, which is a feature that makes her consider moving on to the next.

“On My Own”, highlights that the songstress needs to find a way to stand on her own feet and fight her own battles, while “Fragile”, sees her wanting the comfort her man around, because her heart has reached its breaking point.

“Mr. Right”, talks about finally finding that guy that is her saving grace and completes her puzzle, which is done with the use of a retro old-school vibe. It’s a track that Lauryn Hill could have easily recorded during the era of her 1998 effort, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill.

“Porcelain Doll”, is an empowering anthem where the songstress boasts that she is not a trophy, but rather a full grown woman, while the dramatic closer, “I’m Okay”, sees the songstress rehashing the memories of a failed romance with the use of her exceptionally controlled vocal delivery.

In conclusion, there are a lot of great things about the album, starting with how it plays out like the stages of a breakup from the confrontation, the actual breaking up, being on you own, and finally making the transition into a new relationship, which in this case turns out to be just as bad as the first.

Other positive things include her trying to do something different from her first effort and though, at times, the writing skills of Ne-Yo can be sort of limited, the combination was great, because it didn’t completely compromise her jazzy and often bluesy sound.

In fact, based on quality, Chrisette’s album rightfully occupied the No.1 seat over fellow R&B star Ciara, and even though, Ciara will likely sell the most in the long run that still doesn’t take away from the quality of Chrisette’s riveting project.
