Zayn Malik Covers 'Complex' Magazine

3/24/2016 0

Zayn Malik, who will release his debut solo album 'Mind of Mine' on Friday, covers the April/May issue of Complex magazine, and in the magazine, he dishes on why he admires Kanye West, the difference between him as solo artist versus One Direction and being a bad celebrity. Read excerpts from his interview and peep more stunning photos beneath:

On Admiring Kanye West:
“I believe that success follows authenticity. People see through fake shit. They don’t want to see that; they want a real person. That’s why Kanye is so successful. He’s speaking the truth, regardless of whomever he offends, he isn’t bothered. That’s admirable.”

On One Direction Restricting His Image:
"Mainly my beard, honestly. I wasn’t allowed to keep it. Eventually, when I got older, I rebelled against it, and decided to keep it anyway. That was just because I looked older than the rest of them. That’s one of the things that is now quite cool. I get to keep my beard. I also wanted to dye my hair when I was in the band, but I wasn’t allowed to."

On Speaking His Mind More:
"In terms of me being described as the mysterious one, that was put on me as a stigma because I didn’t get the chance to speak as much. The other boys’ personalities were much more forward. They would answer the questions. I would let that happen because, like I said, I didn’t have any creative input there. I didn’t feel like I was going to say anything about it anyway. Now I get to talk about what I’m passionate about--it’s nice to have the chance to speak."

On Tupac Impacting Him As A Artist:
"Probably Tupac’s All Eyez on Me. The songs are so real, and from a perspective of a place where somebody is not afraid to be completely 100 percent honest. He’s the first rapper to talk about the fact that his mom was a crack addict. For me, that’s courageous as fuck. He took that risk and spoke about everything in detail openly and without any shame. For me to listen to that album as I grew up, it really helped me to understand that it’s OK to be honest with your art, because people appreciate that."

On Being A Bad Celebrity:
I’m a pretty shit celebrity all around. But when it comes to TV, that’s the worst. I hate the whole setup. When it’s interviews like this, I don’t mind. I’m just talking to a normal person. It’s when you are fully glammed up and you’re sitting with a hundred lights in your face and someone is asking you questions in front of a crowd of people--that’s when it becomes a bit strange for me.

Album Review: Kris Allen Tears Down His Walls On Vapid 'Letting You In'

3/24/2016 0

While 'American Idol' has played a key role in the birth of many of today's artists including platinum-selling superstars Carrie Underwood and Kelly Clarkson, not every winner has been able to duplicate even a fraction of their success.

Take Kris Allen, for example. With his boy next door good looks and his unmatched ability to break your heart and make you smile through his interpretation of song, the winner of the show's eighth season seemed to be on the right path, but unfortunately, that has not been the case.

TIME magazine doesn't rank him among the show's 20 Most Successful Alumni (he comes in at No.21) and his album sales since winning the competition have failed to pass the half a million mark. A tally that runner-up Adam Lambert has more than tripled.

Instead, Allen has remained content with a healthy touring schedule and a small, but extremely dedicated fan base that remain as loyal today as they were when they propelled him to what many consider to be an upset victory in 2009. With his fourth post-Idol album, 'Letting You In', the 30-year-old offers up very little that will take him from the background into the main spotlight.

On the opening track, “Love Will Find You”, he sings about the unpredictability of love and how little control we actually have on how and when we experience it.

While the track itself falls into the forgettable category, it does serve its purpose and set up the album’s rampant theme of love and its different stages. In fact, as you breeze through the ten tracks, it begins to feel like a musical love letter to his wife Katy, who will welcome the couple’s second child later this year, and while that is lovely in theory, the results are rarely as rewarding as the first single and title track, “Waves” and “Letting You In”.

On the former, his voice is more confident than it has ever been and it results in a perfectly crafted tune that is reflective of its title and moves you in more ways than one, while the latter sees him at his most vulnerable. Honestly, it is a side that you wish shined through more and even here, you don’t feel like he is completely laying all of his cards on the table.

He is far more comfortable and in the zone on the album’s best track “Faster Shoes”, the airy “Way Up High” and the infectious “Move”, but it is his struggle to completely let go and allow his audience to fully embrace his insecurities and fears that keep ‘Letting You In’ from reaching its full potential.

He makes admirable strides on “If We Keep Doing Nothing”, which was inspired by the 2015 high school shooting in Roseburg, Oregon that resulted in the death of eight students and an assistant professor at Umpqua Community College, and the closer “I Remember You”, but both of those feel anticlimactic, which can also be said about the album as a whole.

Final Verdict

With ‘Letting You In’, Kris Allen delivers what feels like his most personal release to date, but you often wish it was darker, more revealing and frankly, more honest. Instead, it feels like Allen is only presenting you with half-truths and the album’s most glaring deficit is that you don’t feel like you know anything more about him than when you started.

Still, despite failing to reach the heights of his best album, 2012’s near-perfect ‘Thank You Camellia’, there are some enjoyable tracks here and his core fan base will probably levitate towards the album as a whole, but for the masses, it only suggests that his “Time Will Come” at a later date and with a better album.

Kerry Washington Fronts 'Elle' Magazine

3/18/2016 0

Emmy-nominated actress Kerry Washington looks beautiful in a simply sweatshirt as she graces the April 2016 cover of Elle magazine, where she dishes on taking her power to the next level by starring in and executive producing the HBO film, 'Confirmation'.

In the film, which is slated to debut on April 16th, Washington plays Anita Hill, who famously accused then Supreme Court nominee Clarence Thomas of sexual harassment, and in the issue, she talks about the importance of the event, learning not to compromise, the strength that her 'Scandal' character gave her and looking up to Shonda Rhimes. Read excerpts beneath:

On The Importance of Anita Hill's Actions:
"This moment was so important because it created a language around women being able to protect themselves. The behavior that Anita Hill described was going on in a lot of offices throughout the country, and most people didn't think they were doing anything wrong. But this created awareness around that and around the need for women's voices to be heard in our public spaces, both testifying before Congress and sitting on the committee. It really was such a huge cultural shift."

On Speaking Her Truth Without Compromising:
"I'm a person who's always been politically active and passionate about people's rights. I marched against the [2004] Republican Convention. And as my career has expanded, it's been important for me to not stifle that voice. Because you want to be popular, you want people to hire you, and I have to make sure I don't do it less because I'm an actor."

On Olivia Pope Preparing Her For Motherhood:
"Even though Olivia Pope has obviously made the decision that she is not a mom," Washington says, in reference to the 2015 midseason finale, in which—spoiler—Pope gets an abortion, "playing her made me feel like I could be a mom. Because she knows there's always another way—there's always a way to fix it, there's always a way to solve it, to win. And I feel like playing her made me feel like, All right, I can do it. I will figure out how to juggle it all."

On Looking Up To Her Boss, Shonda Rhimes:
"She's been such an amazing resource, as a mom, and as a working mom...I am on one show and I have one kid, and she has three shows and three kids." Right now, she says, departing from her no-family-talk rule, her husband is at home listening to the audio version of Rhimes's book, the first-person self-help journey Year of Yes. "We bought it for a bunch of people for Christmas because I feel like it's a little bit of required reading."

The April issue of Elle will be available on newsstands nationwide on Tuesday, March 22nd.

Lupita Nyong'o Shines On 'InStyle' Cover

3/10/2016 0

Academy Award winner Lupita Nyong'o is the epitome of beauty and poise on the April issue of InStyle magazine, where she opens up about diversity issues within the industry, how she stays passionate about her craft and trying to avoid the Oscar curse.

The 33-year-old actress is currently winning rave reviews in the Broadway production, 'Eclipsed', and has several films on the horizon including the live-action version of 'The Jungle Book' and the chess-prodigy drama 'Queen of Katwe'. Read excerpts of her interview beneath:

On Diversity:
"It’s a disappointment that the nominations this year have not reflected some of the work of people of color, and I hope this moment helps fuel that conversation. There is a real imbalance, from the very creation of the stories and who’s telling them, how, and why. Change has to happen with the writers, the studio, the marketers, the directors. That’s got to be diversified because there is a hunger for the expansion of the role of people of color in the center of narratives."

On Staying Passionate About Her Craft:
"Both my parents raised me to pursue the things that make me feel most alive—what you feel called to do—because that’s how you can have the most effect. That allowed me to get passionate about something that can sometimes seem as inconsequential as acting and then find important things to do with it."

On Avoiding The Oscar Curse:
"Right after the Oscars, I had no idea what I was going to do next. Zero clue. There’s a part of me that thought my life would go back to normal. Like at school. But it didn’t. I did not get out of that unscathed, you know?"

Kim Kardashian West Takes Down Critics With Epic Rant & Another Nude Pic

It looks like Kim Kardashian West and her husband Kanye West are a match made in Twitter ranting heaven!!! In the vein of her husband, the reality superstar fired off a series of tweets last night after some celebrities including Bette Midler, Chloe Grace Moretz and Piers Morgan criticized her for the NSFW nude selfie (above) that she posted on Sunday, March 6th.

Midler joked that "[if] Kim wants us to see a part of her we've never seen, she's gonna have to swallow the camera." Moretz was a little more blunt. "I truly hope you realize how important setting goals are for young women, teaching them we have so much more to offer than just our bodies," the 19-year-old wrote, while Morgan brought up her hubby's financial woes.

It her a while to respond to all of her critics, because she was "busy cashing my $80 million video game check and transferring 53 million into our joint account," but once the mother of two did respond, it was all kinds of epic. See her Kanye-like responses and sounds off below:
