After 2 years of marriage and 12 years together, Angelina Jolie has pulled the plug on her union to Brad Pitt two weeks ago and filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences.

Jolie is asking for physical custody of the couple’s shared six children – Maddox, Pax, Zahara, Shiloh, Vivienne, and Knox – with Pitt only to be granted visitation.

"Angelina Jolie Pitt has filed for dissolution of the marriage. This decision was made for the health of the family. She will not be commenting at this time, and asks that the family be given their privacy during this difficult time," Jolie’s attorney told PEOPLE.

Pitt said, "I am very saddened by this, but what matters most now is the well being of our kids. I kindly ask the press to give them the space they deserve during this challenging time."

Citing irreconcilable differences, the former couple, who met in 2010 on the set of 'Dark Tide', released a joint statement, saying: "It is with a heavy heart that we have come to the decision to divorce. We wish each other nothing but happiness in life and we hope that you respect our and, most importantly, our children's privacy as we go through this difficult period."
