2009 Grammy Awards Performance Highlights

2/09/2009 0
The 51st Annual Grammy Awards took place in Los Angeles last night. To say the least, the show took the words boring and snooze worthy to new depths, so I won't even bother wasting my time or yours by posting all the performances. Check out the highlights below:

T.I. & Justin Timberlake - "Dead & Gone"

Jennifer Hudson - "You Pulled Me Through"

Kanye West, T.I., Jay-Z, Lil' Wayne & MIA - "Swagger Like Us"

Estelle & Kanye West - "American Boy"

Lil' Wayne & Robin Thicke - 'Tie My Hands'

Carrie Underwood - "Last Name"

The Jonas Brothers & Stevie Wonder - "Burnin' Up"/"Superstition"

I'm not really going to go into detail on the performances, but I do want to use this as an opportunity to clarify my comments about calling Carrie Underwood the best female vocalist out. I've gotten numerous messages from people wanting to know why I thought she was the best out, so here it goes. In the original post, I stated, "I honestly can't look back and say I've ever seen a performance where Carrie wasn't vocally great." I never meant to say she the best female singer out, cause she's not, I was simply referring to her consistency, and she is the best vocalist out on the terms of consistency.

As for the performances, The Jonas Brothers and Stevie really surprised me (my personal fave of the night), Jennifer's emotion captured you, and the Hip-hop Summit was just joyful to watch.

More Grammy Performers Announced

2/03/2009 0
Music's biggest night just keeps getting bigger. The 51st annual Grammy Awards, which air on Sunday night on CBS, have added yet another round of performers to the roster: Kanye West will appear with Estelle (most likely for their Song of the Year nominee "American Boy"). Miley Cyrus and Taylor Swift are teaming up. Adele, Chris Brown and Sugarland have been added to the list. And there will be a tribute to legendary Motown group the Four Tops featuring Jamie Foxx, Ne-Yo and original last living original member, Duke Fakir.

The latest additions join a list that already included Jennifer Hudson, the Jonas Brothers, Coldplay, Katy Perry, Radiohead, Rihanna, T.I. with Justin Timberlake, U2, Carrie Underwood, Kid Rock, Paul McCartney with special guest drummer Dave Grohl, Kenny Chesney and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss. The show will also feature a solo performance from Lil Wayne, the night's most nominated artist, and he's expected to throw down his verse on T.I.'s "Swagga Like Us," alongside Jay-Z, Tip and Kanye.

The addition of Ne-Yo to the live roster of talent on the show means that all five of the contenders for Album of the Year — which also include Radiohead, Coldplay, Lil Wayne and Robert Plant & Alison Krauss — will now be performing on the show.

Among the newly added presenters are Sheryl Crow, Queen Latifah, T-Pain, Al Green, actor Jay Mohr and late-night talk-show host Craig Ferguson. They join a list of previously announced presenters that includes Gwyneth Paltrow, Samuel L. Jackson, Jack Black, Duffy, Josh Groban, Simon Baker and jazz musician Charlie Haden.

MTV EMA 2008 Performances

11/06/2008 0
The MTV European Music Awards 2008, which are currently airing in Europe. Check out the performances as they are added continually:

Beyonce - 'If I Were A Boy'

Estelle with Kanye West - 'American Boy'

Katy Perry - 'I Kissed A Girl'

Kanye West - 'Love Lockdown'

Pink - 'So What'

Pink slayed everyone, definitely the highlight of the night, even that's not saying much given these crop of performances. I thought Katy Perry's footballer and cheerleader theme was really cute, Beyonce should have did 'Single Ladies' given this is an award show and the standing there with the mic thing is kind of boring, but she did rock it for what its worth. Good Stuff overall.

Album Review: Estelle - 'Shine'

6/24/2008 0
With Erykah losing her flare after she made her man call Tyrone and the abrupt absence of Lauryn Hill, it seemed that urban alternative lovers were down on their luck, but with the stunning entrance of Londoner Estelle it appears that help has finally arrived. On her American debut album, Estelle not only acquire an all-star cast, including John Legend, who executive produced the set, Will.i.am, Swizz Beatz, Kanye West and Cee—Lo, but she also took risks that few artists in this new age of music are willing to do. From her strong bulky singing voice to her obviously skilled rapping one, Estelle manages to mix what old school entertainers bought to the table, while still putting her own spin on it. From the opening track, 'Wait a Minute (Just a Touch)', produced by Will.i.am, to the Kanye West assisted 'American Boy', she proves that she has an ear for catchy songs that the general public will find appealing. 'Magnificent' features the songstress singing over a Mark Ronson beat to which her voice beautifully rides over and if that wasn't enough, she also adds Kardinal Offishall to give the track a more drastic feel. The only thing about the album that takes about from it is the fact that it doesn't have a single great track, just a bunch of good ones, 'You Are' featuring John Legend gets close, but although Estelle showcases some strong vocals, guest John Legend somehow manages to steal the spotlight. The same occurs on 'Pretty Please (Love Me)', which is draped in a early 60’s soul vibe, but Estelle's voice gets drowned by the band of soul. Estelle captures your attention on every single track, but on most she doesn't hold it for long, because she refuses to let the music flow naturally from her soul. More than anything the album proves that Estelle isn't afraid to take risk, as she tackles genres from modern R&B, dancehall, Sarah Vaughan—style jazz , reggae, soul, and hip-hop.

Shine is overflowing with enough style and originality to serve as a preview of the potential greatness that can be called Estelle. The album isn't a classic like Lauryn's debut, but it proves that if she's willing to seize it, then there’s a classic album in Estelle’s future.

IMO Estelle, thus far, as killed all the 'American Boy' performances and this time having Kanye on stage only made it better. Her album 'Shine', which I plan to put a review up for at some point is currently in stores.

Ashanti and Ja Rule performed on ABC’s “Good Morning America” show on Friday at Bryant Park in New York. Ashanti's leg are just to die for.

Kelly Rowland performed live on ‘Sunrise’ and ‘The Morning Show’ before signing copies of her new album Ms. Kelly: Deluxe Edition in Sydney, Australia. I'm glad Kelly is having success somewhere.

Mel B was spotted as she arrived at Heart Radio Station to pre-record an interview in London.

Estelle attended the private view of Royal Academy of the Arts ‘Summer Exhibition’ in London this week. She needs a new stylist ASAP.
