First Photo: Matthew McConaughey In 'Free State Of Jones'

3/11/2015 0

With 'Interstellar' behind him and 'The Sea Of Trees' set to be released later this year, Matthew McConaughey is already filming his next project, 'The Free State Of Jones', and the first official still has been unveiled from the project.

STX Entertainment released the still you see above, as well as, plot details about the Gary Ross-directed historical adaptation, which puts the Academy Award winner into the role of real life deserter Newton Knight. Set during the Civil War, 'The Free State Of Jones' tells the story of the defiant Southern farmer, Newt Knight, and his extraordinary armed rebellion against the Confederacy. By banding together with other small farmers, and with the assistance of local slaves, Knight was able to launch an uprising that led Jones County, Mississippi to secede from the Confederacy, creating a Free State of Jones. His marriage to Rachel, a former slave, and his establishment of a mixed race community was unique to the post-war South.

McConaughey will have two lovely ladies by his side as Keri Russell is set to star as Newton's wife, Serena, and Gugu Mbatha-Raw, one of last year's breakout stars, will play Newton's lover and eventual second wife, Rachel. The film is scheduled for release on March 11, 2016.

McConaissance continues.

After winning an Academy Award for 'Dallas Buyers Club' last year, Matthew McConaughey continues to sign on for interesting project after interesting project. Having already completed filming 'Sea of Trees' and gearing up to film 'The Free State of Jones' with rising star Gugu Mbatha-Raw, the stud has already lined up his next two film projects.

'Gold', which is slated to begin production in June for a 2016 release, is based on the real-life experience of a modern day prospector, played by McConaughey, who teams up with a geologist to hunt for gold deep in the unchartered jungle of Indonesia. The globe-trotting adventure culminates in one of the most unexpected and scandalous frauds of our time.

'Born To Run', on the other hand, is based on Christopher McDougall's best-selling book 'Born to Run: A Hidden Tribe, Super Athletes, and the Greatest Race the World Has Never Seen', and follows the author as he digs into how the Tarahumara Indians, who live in Mexico’s Copper Canyons, have trained themselves to run for hundreds of miles without rest or injury. The story culminates in a race that pits the tribe against some of America’s top ultra-runners. Interesting!

Matthew McConaughey Talks McConaissance, Being Proud Of His Romantic Comedies Past & Raising Kids In 'GQ'

10/21/2014 0
Matthew McConaughey : GQ (November 2014) photo o-MATTHEW-MCCONAUGHEY-570.jpg

McConaissance continues next month when Matthew McConaughey returns to the big screen in Christopher Nolan's world-saving epic 'Interstellar', and in promotion of the soon-to-to box office juggernaut, the Oscar winner covers the November issue of GQ magazine.

In the forthcoming issue, the handsome actor dishes on the resurgence of his career as a serious actor, being proud of some of his romantic comedies and finally becoming the one thing that he always wanted to be -- a dad. Read excerpts from his interview and peep another photo beneath:

McConaissance

How do you like the word McConaissance?
It's a cool word. It sounds good. It's got a good meter.

It's almost like you had to have one, just so we could call it that.
When you say it, it's like, "I don't know what that is, but it sounds good."

You've been famous since your early twenties. Did you feel like it was a problem, having your image set at such a young age? I've never had fears that I was stuck in one thing. I'm sure we're going to talk about the years when I was in romantic comedies and I was seen as the guy who was on the beach, running around shirtless. I did that. Damn right that was me. I wasn't scared like, "Oh God, I'm going to be stuck here." But I was like, I understand at some point that that is in italics now. So I said, "You know what? I'm not going to be openly presenting that for a while. I'm going to un-brand."

Romantic Comedies

Since you bring it up, is there work in the romantic comedies that you're proud of? Absolutely. These things aren't easy. What's hard is to make them look easy. Those kinds of movies are what they are. They get pooh-poohed by critics. They get pooh-poohed by actors themselves. And in a way I get it, but in other ways it's completely unfair. There's a buoyancy you need to make them work. I believe I gave them buoyancy. And some of the shoots were very difficult, with me trying to fight for the balls on the guy.

What do you mean? What's a romantic comedy? Boy meets girl. They get together. Something happens. Girl takes off. Boy chases girl. They get back together. The end. A lot of times the male is somewhat emasculated, meaning he has to crawl back and say, "I'm nothing without you. If you don't take me back, I'm nothing." And I was always like, "What girl wants that guy?" I've got no problem saying, "I'm sorry. You want to give this another shot?" But I've got to come back with some integrity—even if it's on a moped with a veil on my head. Look, I'm happy if you think I "cruised through" those. I did my work.

I guess it would be an asshole question to ask you to name them all.
Wedding Planner, Failure to Launch, How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days, Fool's Gold, Ghosts of Girlfriends Past... There's five.

And the women that were in them.
So, Jennifer Lopez, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kate Hudson, Kate, Jennifer.

Being A Dad

What do you mean by "secret weapon"?
Never is a man more of a man than when he is the father of a newborn. Whatever decisions you make in the first six months of becoming a father, double down on them. I mean, you're meeting the Courier. You're meeting the Shepherd, the Future Prince. You immediately have something you don't have to think about. You know what's important. Bam! And the clarity of that is like, "Whew." I definitely got more selfish. And at the same time, I think I got more compassionate, which don't always go together, you know?

Were you scared of becoming a father? It's the one thing I've always wanted to be. I knew when I was 8 years old. I mean, I wanted to be things like the Washington Redskins running back and all that stuff, but the one thing I knew I wanted to be was a father. I understood that was why my dad was making me say "Yes, sir" and "Yes, ma'am" to elders. You know, "I'm not on par with the adults yet. There's places to go."

Do your kids say sir and ma'am? Yeah. We just like it. We like the Mr. and Mrs. and the please and thank you's. We take a version of that southern thing.

Matthew McConaughey Lines Up 'Sea of Trees'

5/16/2014 0
Matthew McConaughey has chosen his first post-Oscar project and he made an appearance at the Cannes Film Festival, to dish on the film, which will start shooting this summer under the direction of Gus Van Sant.

Entitled 'Sea of Trees', the forthcoming project sees McConaughey playing a suicidal man who makes a visit to a dense forest at the base of Mt. Fuji in Japan, a place where people go to contemplate life and death.

Although he will next be seen in the Christopher Nolan's highly-anticipated epic 'Interstellar' and is a frontrunner for a Emmy nomination (and hopefully, a deserved win) for 'True Detective', this will mark the first film that he has signed on since winning acting's top prize for 'Dallas Buyers Club' and he admits that more opportunities have come his way. "I'm still looking for things that scare me a little bit. This one (Sea Of Trees) scares me, but in a good way". The film certainly sounds promising!

Matthew McConaughey Emerges As Key Oscar Player With 'Dallas Buyers Club' Role

2/03/2014 0
 photo 309bcf90-b6ac-4e6a-9560-f6ad392599f7.jpg

With Golden Globes, Critics' Choice and Screen Actor Guild wins under his belt, and two nominations for the Epitome of Film Awards, Matthew McConaughey has emerged as a frontrunner for Best Actor at the 86th Annual Academy Awards.

Nominated for his role in 'Dallas Buyers Club', the actor will compete against Leonardo DiCaprio, Bruce Dern, Christian Bale and Chiwetel Ejiofor for the highest honor in his field. With Bale standing as the only nominee that has no chance at winning and given he has already beaten Dern and early favorite Ejiofor at all of the previous award shows, the race stands squarely between McConaughey and DiCaprio.

DiCaprio entered the race late with 'The Wolf of Wall Street', but the role has earned him career best reviews and given he beat out McConaughey for the BAFTA nomination, he could serve as a potential spoiler. Not to mention it is widely-regarded by the industry that one of the generation's finest actors should already have an Academy Award and is overdue for a long career filled with great and even a few iconic roles.

McConaughey, on the other hand, has had one of the best and most-exciting career reinventions in recent memory by trading in his romantic comedy leading man status for independent projects that are more character-driven. Not to mention his daring role as real-life AIDS patient Ron Woodruff is the stuff that Oscar dreams (and wins) are built on and the fact that he lost a whopping 47-pounds to play the part only gives the voting committee more incentive to reward his dedication and passion for the project.

So, who will take home the gold on March 2nd? McConaughey, DiCaprio or one of the other three nominees? Watch profiles on the former two and sound off after the cut:

Matthew McConaughey : GQ (December 2013) photo 800x1122xmatthew-mcconaughey-gq-coverjpgpagespeedic62HoP4ufGY.jpg

He's coming off one of the most creatively inspiring years of his career, garnishing major Oscar buzz for his dramatic performances in 'Dallas Buyers Club' and now, Matthew McConaughey has been named Leading Man of the Year by GQ.

In the magazine's December issue, the Texas-born charmer talks about losing nearly 50 pounds for his role in the film and how it affected him both physically and mentally, saying: "I had one scene where I had to run from gamblers, damn that was hard. Before, I could have done that 500 times. The first time I took off running I made it from here to that door. My legs locked up and - bam! - I crumpled and went down. I went, 'Time out!'"

"That was kind of painful," the actor continued. "I didn't know my legs had gone into that much hibernation. I was pretty damn weak. But the energy I lost from the neck down got transported to the neck up. My mind was kind of hyper acute and aware and sharp."

Watch the trailer for his newest film 'Dallas Buyers Club', currently in theaters, beneath:
