American Idol Recap: Kris Allen & Adam Lambert Race To The Finish Line

5/20/2009 0
One gigantic stage. Two talented singers. Three daring song choices. Four opinionated judges. Joined in unison for the performance finale of American Idol's eighth season. This would mark the last time the final two competitors would showcase to the world exactly who deserved to walk away with the covet title.

In one corner, there is the risky and theatrical talent of Adam Lambert, and in the other corner, the guy next door and charmingly, charismatic styling of crooner Kris Allen.

The guys were given three chances to impress by singing their favorite song of the season, a song chosen by producer Simon Fuller, and lastly, the winner's first single written by judge Kara DioGuardi.

Kris won the coin toss and chose to go second, so Adam kicked the show off.

Adam Lambert - "Mad World"
Adam chose to sing the haunting, "Mad World", which he sung during the "year they born" week and ended with a standing ovation from every single judge including Simon Cowell. During the original performance, I walked away saying that Adam's performance was "sheer brilliance", and although it was still good the second time around, it just failed to impact me the way the original performance did. Honestly, I think I would have rather heard his mesmerizing rendition of "Track Of My Tears" instead. That said, all of the judges loved it, but Simon did think it was a little too theatrical.

Kris Allen - "Ain't No Sunshine"
Kris chose to revisit Top 9's theme of "Top Itunes Downloads", with his version of the classic "Ain't No Sunshine", which I originally declared as a monumental performance for him. Similar to the first time around, everything about the performance just simply worked, the arrangement was great, his vocals were stunning, and once again, this performance proved that no matter how old or known a song is, if the right artist gets his or her hands on it, then new life can be granted. Randy loved that Kris' artistry is a facade, Kara loved the intimate connection he created with the audience, as did Paula, and Simon said the performance eliminated his original thoughts that maybe America had made the wrong decision.

Round 1: Simon declared Kris Allen the winner of the first round, and I have to agree.

Adam Lambert - "A Change Is Gonna Come"
Simon Fuller made a daring choice for Adam when he picked the R&B classic, "A Change Is Gonna Come", but as always, Adam was up for the challenge. The first part of the performance was a little shaky, but midway through he found his groove and ended by delivering those big notes that only Adam can deliver. The performance was good and he was definitely feeling it with a connection, but the problem with the performance for me, is that it lacked soul, which is a major requirement for a song like "A Change Is Gonna Come". Especially, when compared to the greats that took on the classic beforehand, it just paled in comparison. That said, Randy thought it was unbelievable, Kara thought it was his best version of a song ever, Paula declared he will be "iconic", and Simon felt it put him "100% back in the game".

Kris Allen - "What's Going On"
Simon Fuller made another risky choice when he chose the socially conscious Marvin Gaye classic, "What's Going On", for crooner Kris Allen. Sticking to his guns, Kris put an acoustic spin on the classic, that was good, but once again left a lot to be desired. I have to fully agree with Simon when he said the performance just wasn't worthy for this stage of the competition as it was extremely too plain. Another thing that bugged me about the performance was that there didn't seem to be a connection. That said, the judges with the exception of Simon, gave Kris positive feedback.

Round 2: Simon declared Adam Lambert the winner of the second round, but truth be told, I didn't think either of the song choices were fitting for their voices. That said, I agree, Adam takes round two.

Adam Lambert & Kris Allen - "No Boundaries"
Let me start off by saying, my problem with the winner's single, is that it always tend to suit one of the contestants better, usually the front runner, and places the other at an disadvantage given it is the last thing the audience hears. Seriously, if you look back, it starts with Kelly Clarkson's winning single, "A Moment Like This", Fantasia's winning single, "I Believe", and Jordin Sparks' single, "This Is My Now", which placed all of their competitors at a disadvantage, because it just simply suited their voices better and gave them the shine. I personally think, the finalists should pick all three of their songs on finale night, and then the winner performs the winning single after being crown the following night.

With that said, let's start with Adam's version of the Kara DioGuardi penned, "No Boundaries". The performance was extremely pitchy, especially the beginning, and though Adam tried to rescue it with his big high notes, the task ended unsuccessful. Randy thought he had some pitch problems, Kara loved that someone with his talent was singing one of her songs, Paula loved it, and Simon, who slammed the song, said he was one of the competition's most original contestants ever.

As for Kris, who is looked at as the underdog, the song was actually a better fit for him (surprising), which Randy pointed out, but still he struggled for the majority of the performance with trying to find the correct key. That said, it was still a much better version than Adam's, at least, for me. Randy called him an amazing competitor, Kara loved how compelling he is, Paula and Simon both reestablished that he rightfully deserved to be in the final two.

Round 3: Truth be told, the song is far from great, but I do feel like Kris granted it the most justice. Simon failed to call a winner.

PREDICTIONS:
Celebrity Bug's Pick To Win: For me, no matter how I look at it, whether it be from this particular night or the competition as a whole, Kris Allen takes the title.

Who Will Win: Its really a toss up, but Adam Lambert will likely take the title, given the judges have endorsed him from week one. That said, Kris has continuously emerged as a darkhorse, so he still has the chance to reign supreme.

American Idol Recap: Kris Allen & Adam Lambert Advance To The Finals, Plus Jordin Sparks & Katy Perry

5/14/2009 0

Danny Gokey is dancing off 'American Idol,' leaving Adam Lambert and Kris Allen to duke it out in the finale of the popular Fox singing competition next week.

Gokey, the bespectacled 29-year-old church music director and recent widower from Milwaukee, was revealed to have received the fewest viewer votes on Wednesday.

Gokey had continually impressed the judges with his husky voice, but not his hip shaking, throughout the contest. "Idol" judge Simon Cowell called his cover of Joe Cocker's version of "You Are So Beautiful" on Tuesday a "vocal master class" but said his dancing during Terence Trent D'Arby's "Dance Little Sister" was "desperate."

Along with Lambert, Gokey had long been considered to be a front-runner of the eighth season, never appearing as one of the show's bottom vote-getters. "Idol" host Ryan Seacrest said more than 88 million votes were received with 1 million votes separating the top two singers, meaning next week's Lambert-Allen showdown may be closer than anticipated.

"Look, none of us would have predicted this, guys," Cowell said at the end of the show.

In addition to the results, Season 6 winner Jordin Sparks performed her new single, "Battlefield", and Katy Perry performed her latest single, "Waking Up In Vegas".

Stunning Performance.

Horrible Vocals.

American Idol Recap: Kris Allen, Danny Gokey & Adam Lambert Battle For Top 2 Spots

5/13/2009 0
With only one week left before the finals, Kris Allen, Danny Gokey and Adam Lambert can all finally see their dreams within reach, and utilized this as an opportunity to showcase just why they made it this far.

The guys sung two songs, one chosen by the judges and the other chosen by them.

Danny Gokey - "Dance Little Sister" (Chosen by Paula Abdul)
Danny immediately admitted he didn't know the song, but as always he was up for the challenge. With every performance, Danny has constantly given great vocals, but he just doesn't possess anything else to match that asset. The performance was okay, not great, and my biggest problem with Danny continues to be that he is just a little too old-school to thrive in today's music market. Taylor Hicks anyone? That said, aside from the dancing, the judges loved it.

Kris Allen - "Apologize" (Chosen by Kara DioGuardi & Randy Jackson)
Kris Allen was burden with the unfortunate task of singing One Republic's massive hit that is still fresh in the mind of music listeners everywhere, so would he sink or swim? I guess that depends on how you interpret the performance, because although he didn't take risks or completely revamp the song like he has done in the past, he did deliver an extremely solid version of the now classic. The song was a perfect choice for him and this is definitely the type of music that he will record one day. I loved it and, for me, he remains the only contestant of three, that I can actually see being successful long term.

Adam Lambert - "One" (Chosen by Simon Cowell)
Brilliant! First off, the U2 song is unbelievably great in its own right, but when paired with Adam's big theatrical voice its almost too much to bear. I've been far from an Adam supporter, but he rightfully deserves a spot in the finals.

Danny Gokey - "You Are So Beautiful"
Taking an undeniable classic ballad and pairing it with Danny's voice, always results in a winner. To put it simply, the vocals were great and it totally made up for that first performance that was just okay. Simon called the performance, "a vocal masterclass", but didn't like the change in arrangement.

Kris Allen - "Heartless"
When I heard Kris was singing Kanye West's "Heartless", I thought he had blew his chances for the finals, but boy was I wrong. It was risky, bold, and ultimately a complete win for Mr. Allen. Stunning vocals, originality, and honesty I could go on and on, but I'll end by saying Kris is the only one of the three to pick a recent song, which says a lot and makes me even more of a fan.

Adam Lambert - "Crying"
To be brief, the ending was amazing, but other than that the performance as a whole left a lot to be desired. That said, Adam is pretty much a lock for the finals.

PREDICTIONS:
I'm supporting Kris all the way and based on these performances Danny should bid farewell, but sadly it might be the end of the line for Kris.

American Idol Recap: Final 3 Resides With The Boys, Paula Abdul Proves She Still Has It, Plus Daughtry & No Doubt

5/07/2009 0
For the first time in "American Idol" history, the final three competing for the crown are men.

Allison Iraheta, the last woman remaining in Season 8, was voted out of the competition on Wednesday night, as Celebrity Bug predicted.

Next week's show will be the first time a female hasn't been in the top three in the show's history.

"As she leaves us with the top three... the boys club gets set for next week," show host Ryan Seacrest said as Allison mockingly yelled "Noooooo!" before smiling and hugging finalists Danny Gokey, Kris Allen and Adam Lambert.

The top 3 perform again two songs again on Tuesday, one chosen by the judges and their personal favorite.

In addition, to the results, Paula Abdul and Daughtry performed their new singles, while No Doubt hit the stage with one of their classics.

Paula has always been more of an entertainer than singer, like Britney Spears and Janet Jackson, and that's exactly what this performance displayed. I likes.

Love the song.

Yikes! Gwen's voice has definitely seen better days.

American Idol Recap: Adam Lambert Slays The Competition With 'Rock & Roll'

5/06/2009 0
Rock & Roll, was the task at hand, for the Top 4 on last night's episode of 'American Idol'.

The final four contestants took the stage to give their best shot at the genre and even teamed up in groups of two, to deliver some smoking duets, under the assistance of this week's mentor Slash.

Adam Lambert - "Whole Lotta Love"
Its pretty much known that Adam Lambert and rock, go together like macaroni and cheese, so it was pretty safe to assume that the rocker would deliver and that's exactly what he did. Randy, said this is exactly the type of record he should record, Kara, called him a "rock god", Paula, deemed the performance "perfect", and Simon, stated no one would top his performance, and on this rare occasion, I completely agree with all the judges.

Allison Iraheta - "Cry Baby"
Allison chose a Janis Joplin classic, which as Simon pointed out, took a strong likening to the original version, which led to a feisty rant from the songstress. Still, all in all, she sounded great and it was my personal favorite performance from her, because she actually had some youth appeal.

Kris Allen & Danny Gokey - "Renegade"
I thought the duets were pointless and ultimately unfair since they chose to put the two rockers together, instead of splitting them up like it should have been done. That said, the duo sounded strong in unison and did a pretty good job with a genre that obviously isn't their strong suit.

Kris Allen - "Come Together"
The good thing about Kris is that he clearly knows who he is as an artist and chooses songs that fit within his range. I loved the performance and thought it was extremely strong, especially given Rock isn't his main suit, but unfortunately the judges didn't agree.

Danny Gokey - "Dream On"
"Dream On", is one of the best rock songs ever, and the first part of the performance was killer, but his bid to put a rock influence on his soulful voice towards the end, was a complete and utter disaster. Simon thought the performance was "like watching a horror movie" and based on that last note, I have to agree.

Adam Lambert & Allison Iraheta - "Slow Ride"
Adam and Allison together is a no brainer and just as expected the performance was great, which led to Kara calling them a "rock God and rock Goddess". Simon even thinks Adam may have helped Allison stay in the competition a week longer.

PREDICTIONS:
Bottom 2: Based on the performances, Allison and Danny, but taking the judges comments in, Kris will likely replace Danny.

Who's Going Home: Allison, should finally hit the highway this week, but Simon's comments may have led Kris to that road instead.
